I wonder if anyone failed to see this coming?
In one of the craziest elections in American history, he overcame a lack of experience, a funny name, two candidates who are political institutions and the racial divide to become the 44th President of the United States.
I suppose I don’t have a problem with this. I mean, in the end, who else was it going to be? Even if Obama had lost the primary and Hillary was currently picking her cabinet appointments, I wouldn’t have been shocked to see Obama as the choice.
TIME would have been chastised to death had they picked anyone else. I think its more interesting to take a glance at the runners up: Hank Paulson, Nicolas Sarkozy, Sarah Palin, and Zhang Yimou. If any one of these four beat out Obama there would be riots on the streets for sure.
I'm not so sure how meaningful such an “honor” this actually is. I looked through TIME's archives and noticed that Bush got the person of the year twice, in 2000 and 2004. Interesting about 2004, the subtitle says “American Revolutionary” and they chose him “For sticking to his guns (literally and figuratively), for reshaping the rules of politics to fit his ten-gallon-hat leadership style…” Not sure what that ten-gallon-hat leadership style means…
“Even if Obama had lost the primary and Hillary was currently picking her cabinet appointments, I wouldn’t have been shocked to see Obama as the choice.”
First woman as President and not pick her? That'd be an idiotic move.
