The Washington Post reports political analysts’ calculation that yesterday’s Cruz victory in Wisconsin is a forerunner to a significant defeat of the political right in Congress.
Conventional wisdom says vulnerable Senate Republicans would like to share the ticket in November with anyone but Donald Trump. But the apparent replacement choice, Sen. Ted Cruz (Tex.), might not be much better for them.
It’s hard to imagine a more far-right presidential candidate than Cruz, who has shown little to no willingness to appeal to the broader electorate that Republicans arguably need to win the White House and maintain control of the Senate. Some political analysts even think Republicans’ majority in the House could be in play with not just a Trump nomination, but also a Cruz nomination. …WaPo
“Political analysts” refers to the Cook Report, the cordon bleu of political analysis. Definitely in the winners’ circle.
As for Cruz’s win, it’s yet another indication of the brewing war on the right. Voters in Wisconsin have given a hearty okay to a Republican candidate who is detested by Congressional Republicans and more than half of all voters. Lotsa luck there, Senator Ted. Or wait: what if the alternative were to be Donald Trump!
Aw jeez! The alternative is Donald Trump!
Democrats are trying to control their expressions of glee. While both Republican candidates show signs of serious personality disorders, the two foremost candidates on the left are healthy, well-informed and temperate citizens running against two candidates on the far right — one who has already shown he’s hard to work with, and the other who is “a complete wildcard.”
