Newsweek Magazine's Latest Cover: Hit the Road Barack

Newsweek magazine is shaking things up again with their latest cover — Niall Ferguson telling President Obama to hit the road and our only path to prosperity is the Romney-Ryan ticket. Um, I wonder what Ferguson said about the Bush-Cheney ticket? It seems we were literally run off the road to prosperity and most Americans, the middle class that is, fell off a steep precipice. It also seems that the austerity policy in Britain is working so well, is that what Ferguson wants to see in this country? You realize I am being sarcastic. The fact is, the Obama Administration inherited a boatload of trouble and four years can’t guarantee one can dig out of the muck. France ousted right wing Nicolas Sarkozy and now they are still facing trouble with new president, Socialist Francois Hollande.

Yeah, hit the road Barack, in exchange for the wealthy getting more tax cuts from the Romney-Ryan ticket at the expense of the poor and middle class. Don’t get me wrong, there is plenty to be upset with the Democrats and President Obama about, but what about the Republicans taking their share of the blame for the economic mess? After all, isn’t Paul Ryan a member of a hugely unpopular Congress?

  1. Honest writing Newsweek!! The facts make voting easy.

  2. What President Obama accomplished in the last 3 years to name a few:
    -Equal pay for equal work
    -Improved women’s health care
    -Protect women’s right to choose
    -End insurance company abuses
    -Keep insurance premiums low
    -Expand access to healthcare
-Close the Medicare prescription drug donut hole
-Saved the auto industry from collapse
-Made college education accessible to more students by ending subsidies to banks
    -Passed Wall Street reform
    -Ended the Iraq War
-Brought Osama bin Laden to justice.
-New tax credits to encourage businesses to hire unemployed and disabled veterans.

And he has put up with Republicans who refuse to work with him to help our country.

  3. Please. This president is toast. Even Democrats run away from him. I don’t see anyone coming out of the woodwork talking about his wonderful past and attributes. He sees the world only as those who are oppressed and those who are the oppressors–a very small-minded follower of the radical Alinsky.

  4. I only support Obama because the GOP will (further) ruin this country if put back in charge. I firmly believe the Republican Party is fundamentally unethical and unworthy of our support.

Otherwise, O’s been ineffectIve and practically in hiding since the Dems lost the House to the Teabaggers.

  5. Compelling article by Ferguson although there are some inaccuracies. Overall as is so often the case we have an incumbent that doesn’t deserve to stay and a challenger that doesn’t deserve to win.

  6. From the rash of first time commenters tossing out ‘zingers’ and radical right one-line talking points can we assume that that the Romney / Ryan campaign is now funding ‘hit-and-run’ bloggers?

  7. It appears that James Fallows at The Atlantic takes Niall Ferguson to the woodshed point-by-point in his article titled:

As a Harvard Alum, I Apologize
    by James Fallows

Yes, I know, you could imagine many sentences that would follow that headline. But here is what I have in mind right now: A tenured professor of history at my undergraduate alma mater has written a cover story for Daily Beast/Newsweek that is so careless and unconvincing that I wonder how he will presume to sit in judgment of the next set of student papers he has to grade. It’s by the irrepressible Niall Ferguson, it is headlined “Obama’s Gotta Go,” and its case rests on logic of this sort:

Certainly, the stock market is well up (by 74 percent) relative to the close on Inauguration Day 2009. But the total number of private-sector jobs is still 4.3 million below the January 2008 peak.

Hmmm, what might possibly be the flaw in this comparison? Apart from the fact that Obama did not take office until January 2009 and that private sector jobs have recovered better in his first three-plus years than they did under George W. Bush.

    [...]

It seems with facts thrown into the equation Ferguson’s rant turns into nothing more than misleading posturing by a partisan pawn.

“What President Obama accomplished in the last 3 years to name a few:
-Equal pay for equal work WE ALREADY HAD THAT
-Improved women’s health care IMPROVED WOMEN’S HEALTH CARE? HOW? BY ALLOWING THEM TO MURDER MORE BABIES?
-Protect women’s right to choose AGAIN- MORE BABIES MURDERED
-End insurance company abuses THIS IS JUST BALONEY
-Keep insurance premiums low OH YEAH RIGHT- WE SWITCHED COMPANIES TO GET A LOWER PREMIUM-BECAUSE IT WAS COSTING US $700 PER MONTH JUST FOR ME FOR A $1000 DEDUCTIBLE-IT WAS THEN $68 PER WEEK AND NOW IT IS BACK UP TO $700 PER MONTH AND I KNOW HAVE A $2750 DEDUCTIBLE
-Expand access to healthcare NOT FOR THE MIDDLE CLASS
-Close the Medicare prescription drug donut hole
-Saved the auto industry from collapse THE AUTO INDUSTRY WOULDN’T HAVE BEEN IN TROUBLE IF THEY HAD BEEN RUN PROPERLY TO BEGIN WITH-LOOK AT FORD- THEY NEEDED NO BAIL OUT BECAUSE THEY KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING-IF WE CONTINUE TO GIVE MONEY TO MULTI BILLION DOLLAR COMPANIES THEY WILL NEVER LEARN
-Made college education accessible to more students by ending subsidies to banks
    -Passed Wall Street reform
-Ended the Iraq War REALLY???? IT’S OVER??? DO YOU EVEN WATCH THE NEWS???
-Brought Osama bin Laden to justice. OH YES HE DID IT DIDN’T HE….FORGET ABOUT SEAL TEAM 6 IT WAS ODUMBA WHO DID IT….
-New tax credits to encourage businesses to hire unemployed and disabled veterans. TAX CREDITS FOR BUSINESSES? ISN’T THAT GIVING TAX CUTS TO THE WEALTHY???”

OBAMA IS NOTHING BUT TROUBLE FOR THIS COUNTRY AND AS MUCH AS I WOULD LIKE TO BE ABLE TO SAY “I TOLD YOU SO” I DO NOT THINK AMERICA WILL BE HERE IN 4 MORE YEARS IF HE IS RE-ELECTED. I DO NOT WANT TO BE GIVEN THE CHANCE TO SAY “I TOLD YOU SO”. ODUMBA HAS TO GO OR WE WILL BE GONE.

  10. Kudos, mimi. These are some of the most cogent, reasoned, well-researched and substantiated comments I have read here for a while. Your “CAPS” certainly added to its authoritativeness.

Finally, your “ODUMBA” touch of genius was what really sold your message.

  11. America gone if President Obama is re-elected? I’m not a President Obama fan (I’ve voted third party in every election) but spare me Mimi. More mindless hyperbole. America will survive just fine with President Obama or a President Romney. In all honesty, we are in for more hard times and more bumpy rides regardless of who wins the Presidency. The Great Correction isn’t done correcting yet.

  12. I just want to post here to say I think I’m in love with Dorian.

  14. I think if you two would add [snark][/snark] markers you wouldn’t appear so frightening to the ‘newbies.’ ;)
