Romney Doesn’t Want To Be President

As if failing to apologize for Obama Care Massachusetts style, being a serial flip flopper and belonging to the wrong cult weren’t enough Mitt Romney now believes in science.

Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney broke with Republican orthodoxy on Friday by saying he believes that humans are responsible, at least to some extent, for climate change.

“I believe the world is getting warmer, and I believe that humans have contributed to that,” he told a crowd of about 200 at a town hall meeting in Manchester, New Hampshire.

“It’s important for us to reduce our emissions of pollutants and greenhouse gases that may be significant contributors.”

Now how do you spell political suicide?  This will not go over very well with either the corporate base or the knuckle dragging base of the Republican Party.

  1. Maybe he’s fishing for the niche?

A significant portion of the GOP consists of anti-science, culture warriors who listen to whatever their leadership tells them. But six of the candidates are working that crowd. That’ll split that vote.

Romney may be fishing for the minority within the GOP who are willing and capable of understanding scientific data and thinking independently. If he’s the only one seeking that vote, he’ll get it all, and if the majority is split, then he wins.

It’s a long shot but it’s all he’s got. I hope he makes it (assuming he’s genuine, which is still in doubt IMO).

  2. “Mitt Romney now believes in science.”

That’s pretty much the kiss of death for modern day republicans isn’t it? Of course he still has the superstition angle covered so maybe they cancel each other out. ;-) In any case, it probably won’t matter a great deal given today’s thinking-challenged electorate.

  3. Jspencer,

In the 1990′s the Republicans were the party of science while the Democrats were the party of junkscience. Why else would the anti-vaccine movement come out of progressive politics?

Considering the Democrats refuse to believe toxicology, epidemiology, or even demographics. Even on evolution, Democrats believe that it stops 100,000 of years ago.

  4. LOL SD
Please show links to party platforms or prominent Democrats making these claims. W supported “creationism” during his time as POTUS. Please show one vote or big Democrat jumping into the mercury tin hat crowd…

That has always been the Big Lie.

“Climate change” remains largely a political, not scientific, issue, an environmentalist and collective political movement that has had more notoriety and arguably more staying power than the “population explosion” craze in the 1960s-1970s, the “coming food crisis” in the 1970s, concern about earlier, downward-temp climate change (a new Ice Age was imminent according to the most strident activists), complete with the need then as now to transform our industrial and political system accordingly…

This has always been a Big Lie.

Meanwhile, the Religious Right is always a boogey man, though the Religious Left never is criticized (because it engages in the “politically correct” form of politics and votes for the right party).

  6. Lol seriously SD you hold up the anti-vaccine movement as an example as if they are politically relevant. You guys like to make a big deal out of groups on the left that wield no real power and say “SEE! SEE! The left has crazies too!”. Code Pink, anti-vaccine, these are small ineffectual, not mainstream folks. Meanwhile the loons on the right are mutli-billion dollar several millions strong, getting to sit with politicians and help them write legislation power brokers. But in your mind I’m sure Code Pink is just as influential as the Koch Bros and FOX news.

  7. Good link Barky but DLS is one of those conservatives that think any established science that doesn’t agree with their preconceived ideas is junk science. Yes CO2 and the green house effect have been established science for decades and there is little doubt that burning fossil fuels is responsible for the increase of CO2. I for one think it’s too late to do anything about it now so I’m glad I’m old because it’s going to be a rough ride.

  8. False statement, Ron. This surprised and saddened me.

I had earlier attempted a posting with 6-8 links directing the numerous souls who apparently have never see it and would prefer junk to gold (whatever conforms to this political movement), and it was rejected, (Maybe that’s fitting for a leftist site!)

(numerous other nuggets left out this time, maybe not worth trying to re-introduce them now)

  9. slamfu,

The left’s support for open borders and unlimited immigration demonstrates that the left does not really care about global warming or global climate change or whatever it is called this year.

That the leadership of the left refuses to give up any privledge in order to help the environment demonstrates that the left does not really care.

That the left drives around in limos and live in mansions and fly around the world to vacation shows that climate regulation is just another government program that will be used for social engineering and central planning.

  10. It should hardly come as news that conservatives have a tenuous relationship with science or that they tend to be suspicious of knowledge (including history) that doesn’t fit their preconceptions. We see that dynamic in action right here at TMV, but it’s even more in evidence in the world outside. Romney is the GOP’s best chance to unseat Obama, but republicans will most likely throw him over in favor of some inept loon.

  11. I’ll point out again, that you can believe in the science without believing in the politics.

When he proposes following the Kyoto protocols, that will news.

  12. The left’s support for open borders and unlimited immigration demonstrates that the left does not really care about global warming or global climate change or whatever it is called this year.

Let’s play a game of “pick out the things wrong with this statement”! 2 straw Democrats, a non sequitur, all wrapped in a cozy racism blanket! Good work, SD, fitting as much crap into one statement as possible.

Oops! I guess I hadn’t read this gem earlier, which might be even *more* full of wrongness:
Considering the Democrats refuse to believe toxicology, epidemiology, or even demographics. Even on evolution, Democrats believe that it stops 100,000 of years ago.

It all boils down to “if you’re not a racist like me, you’re obviously stupid!” Yeah, not so much, buddy.
