Now that Dave Weigel is no longer employed by the Washington Post, Matthew Yglesias points to a hypothetical scenario proposed by David Carr at the New York Times (emphasis is in original):
David Carr makes an excellent point about the departure of my friend Dave Weigel from The Washington Post:
A little thought experiment: What if a reporter made a wildly inappropriate video suggesting that the secretary of state, who happens to be a woman, should drink Mad Bitch beer? Surely that reporter would be forced to apologize to Hillary Rodham Clinton before walking the plank. Yet when this happened, Dana Milbank, the longtime Washington Post star who made the video, remained a prized political writer at the paper.
And if I may say so, the Post handled the “Mouthpiece Theater” fiasco more-or-less correctly. The concept was bad and the execution terrible, so they called it off. But they still liked the things they liked about Milbank, so he’s still working for them doing those things.
