Our Blogroll Is Back On The Front Page
We've moved our famous TMV categorized blogroll back on the front page of the newly re-designed The Moderate Voice. You can now find an extensive archive of posts on a separate page, instead of on the site's front page. And many thanks to those of you who contributed to TMV in May. Your contributions helped the redesign happen. … [Read more...] about Our Blogroll Is Back On The Front Page
Anthropology Alert!
LA Times: Chicken bones say Polynesians beat Europeans to New World After decades of contention, New Zealand researchers have provided the first direct evidence that Polynesians sailed across thousands of miles of the Pacific Ocean to reach South America long before the arrival of the Spanish around AD 1500. Their proof? Chicken bones. Using genetic analysis and … [Read more...] about Anthropology Alert!
To Republicans: Do Not Use Racial Slurs
Unbelievable: Brit Hume called former Senator John Glenn a "partisan—spearchucker" to describe his role in a Fred Thompson investigation back in his old Senate days on FOX News Sunday. Video and transcript, of course, at Crooks and Liars. John Amato looked "spearchucker" up in the urban dictionary: "A derogatory phrase for a black male used in reference to his … [Read more...] about To Republicans: Do Not Use Racial Slurs
Prime Chance
I have no qualms about saying that now-indicted Rep. William Jefferson (D-LA) should be expelled (he should have left Congress a long time ago, and the time for "voluntary" resignation is long past). But can Congress use this opportuinity to get rid of some of the other swamp-creatures still dwelling in the House? I say yes--and that it will be politically savvy to try. … [Read more...] about Prime Chance
Begging for Billionaires
PatHMV writes at Stubborn Facts that "Rich Horton has done some excellent original reporting by securing an interview with documentary filmmaker Philip Klein, about his new film on eminent domain abuse." Because he was so impressed, Pat decided to do what Rich asked (to crosspost the original post at The Iconic Midwest at Stubborn Facts). I share Pat's view that this post … [Read more...] about Begging for Billionaires
Features and Bugs
I've never read anything quite as revealing about the Christian Right's atttitude towards women than this passage that treats increased risk of internal bleeding from a perforated uterus as a good thing. Wow. Wow. … [Read more...] about Features and Bugs
Missing Soldiers’ Photo IDs Posted
A Sunni insurgent group today posted video of the military identification cards of the two U.S. soldiers missing since an ambush in Iraq's Triangle of Death on May 12. There is no indication in the video that Specialist Alex Jimenez or Private Byron Fouty are still alive. The video is from the Islamic State of Iraq, an insurgent group that includes Al Qaeda in Iraq. It … [Read more...] about Missing Soldiers’ Photo IDs Posted
Thompson and $
The Wall Street Journal has an interesting article up about Fred Thompson. Christopher Cooper writes: As a late entry into the crowded, expensive, presidential campaign, Fred Thompson's first big test of viability will be his ability to raise money quickly. A major part of the former Tennessee senator's strategy is a heavy reliance on the Internet to get his message out and … [Read more...] about Thompson and $
Debate: Instant Replay
Subjective, undoubtedly prejudiced reactions: Two Democratic candidates brought themselves into sharper focus tonight: Joe Biden and, to a lesser extent, Chris Dodd as informed, forceful, experienced and realistic political figures. Whether that kind of heft translates into poll numbers is another question. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, obviously on defense as front … [Read more...] about Debate: Instant Replay
What’s American Liberalism… Exactly: Part II?
Yesterday, I published a post about American Liberalism (and linked to it here). A little while later, three great bloggers - Pamela Leavey, Libby Spencer and Ron Chusid, answered some of my questions and shared their thoughts on what American liberalism stands for. Because it was already quite late in the Netherlands, I decided to respond to them today. I just published a … [Read more...] about What’s American Liberalism… Exactly: Part II?
The Democratic Debate
Yesterday, the Democratic candidates debated each other on various issues. Dr. e. published several posts about the debate, therefore I have decided to only publish a post about the debate at my own blog. If you all are interested in my thoughts on the debate, I encourage you all to read my post (including videos). Sadly, I was not able to watch the debate live (time … [Read more...] about The Democratic Debate
Spinning It
Engram has an interesting post up at Back Talk about whether or not Iraqis believe that "life is better today than it was under Saddam Hussein." Back Talk links to this poll and says yes, the majority of Iraqis believe that life has gotten better (slightly, but still). Head on over there and take a look at the graph. Engram is making one mistake: if you want to know what the … [Read more...] about Spinning It

DVD Review: The Good Shepherd
What happens when someone gives their ALL -- and we do mean ALL -- to a job or cause? What happens when the job or cause becomes absolutely paramount in their lives? Can they win..yet, in the end, actually lose? Can you not sell out but, in reality, but not selling out...completely sell out? Robert De Niro's critically acclaimed directorial debut "The Good Shepherd" is now … [Read more...] about DVD Review: The Good Shepherd
Fatal Flaw in the Surge
There have been many articles and posts of late on the progress of the so-called "surge" in Iraq. As both critics and supporters of it agree, political reconciliation is the end-game of the surge. Without Iraqi politicians coming together and agreeing on the fundamental questions that divide the nation, any short-term decrease in violence will go for naught. The strategy of the … [Read more...] about Fatal Flaw in the Surge
If I Were a Bookie: Democratic Debates June 3, 2007
If I had a fedora, and a zoot suit, I'd get me a bank of phones and some old adding machines. Notebook. Sharpened pencils. Old School. But, after watching the Democratic debates tonight, I wouldn't go get more bets to 'balance' the positive side of The Book. I'd go after bets on three candidates, and place high for bettors who bet ‘against’ these three receiving the … [Read more...] about If I Were a Bookie: Democratic Debates June 3, 2007
An Interreligious Conversation Part Two
I'm sorry I didn't get to these questions Michael vdG asked a bit sooner, I got busy with a project, also these questions are a bit more difficult to address. Basically, these are questions we don't ask or need to ask. Christianity developed a totally different mindset from Judaism and therefore many questions from a Christian elicit the response: "Huh?" Q: What is the role … [Read more...] about An Interreligious Conversation Part Two
Senator Mike Gravel’s Longshot, Just Became Far Longer
Vets who have to wait and wait in line at VA hospitals for even the most simple, let alone the most serious of illnesses, and those who have to travel far to get to a VA hospital for multiple treatments because the one near them doesn't have all the proprietary necessities to treat them... I don't know that such vets will take Senator Mike Gravel to their hearts. Senator … [Read more...] about Senator Mike Gravel’s Longshot, Just Became Far Longer
Welcome To The Newly Designed TMV
And, so, today a new era begins for The Moderate Voice. Our new design better reflects what TMV is today and what we hope it will become in coming years as it continues its rapid growth as a prime moderate/centrist/independent voice on the Internet.
