Just sit tight and seriously – ask yourself, how would you react if Nancy Pelosi had sought to do this? From The Hill:
Speaker-designate John Boehner (R-Ohio) intends to commandeer a swanky office space adjacent to the House floor and build a women’s restroom for female lawmakers.
For years, men have had the luxury of using facilities located adjacent to the House floor, just outside the Speaker’s lobby. But women have had no such option.
If women need to powder their noses, they must instead go downstairs or to a restroom several halls away from the chamber.
So – let’s be clear here: when there were 56 members of the House who were Democratic females and just 17 who were Republican, that bathroom arrangement was fine (and all the years prior). But now that there are seven more GOP women (for a total of 24) and eight fewer Democrats (a total of 48), that arrangement – no can do? (The total change is just ONE overall – from 73 in the 111th Congress down to 72 in the 112th.) They need Boehner to have the House Parlementarian’s office turned into a bathroom for the women? (See more here re: women in and out of Congress.)
Was this a concession to Michele Bachmann for not getting a leadership position?
I go back to the first question: in all seriousness, imagine if this post were titled, “Increase in Democratic Women in House Gets Pelosi to OK New Girls Powder Room.” This is similar to when Byron York wrote this in August 2008.
