Tokyo Rose of another wartime comes to mind. During WWII, she was the woman who broadcast radio condemnations, ridicules, criticisms of Allied’ leaders –broadcasting her screed to men in the trenches as well as their commanders to attempt to dishearten them by jeering them with sarcasn, and saying over and over the Allies were losing. And accompanying it all with pop music as entertainment.
Just the charming kind of betrayer one needs at one’s side when trying with everything one has, to win the bloody day for all the hopefully no-bloodshed days ahead. And being the shill who spouts as idealogue, from within a compost of entertainment, continues in our day also.
Sometimes when various US “pundits” [a word I notice has become a slur when once it meant a person ‘expert’ in one thing or another] say something about whether they personally like or have pique over something re government and especially spinning hard about a current President, Commander in Chief … I think back to civics class long long [there ought be about ten more ‘longs’ in there…] ago.
In civics I learned about the dignity many people kept about their commanders, while many of the citizenry were attempting to be free from truly vicious forces, whether in home ground-wars, struggles for justice. That a majority of serious people who were for the freedom of all, but not front line powder/ bullet carriers, knew they had NO credibility for supposing, guessing, dunning, blathering about commanders’ actual intents and minds… unless they were in the inner circle of that President, and/or on the front lines taking gunpowder, and thereby ‘in’ on another kind of intelligence entirely.
But not so in our time. ‘Restraint is a statesman’s trait. I guess, not a ‘pundit’s.’
Here’s Bill Kristol saying the President ‘bragged’ about bin Laden being gone, and al Qaeda being on the run– but now [sorta in my opinion, like Spy vs Spy cartoon in Mad magazine] it seems Mr. Kristol thinks the closing of embassies is not high level security protocol but means the Prez and the US is now on the run.
THere are many ways to understand the world on any given day.
Just my .02. Facts that have nothing to do with Kristol’s projection that Obama was ‘bragging’, and have nothing to do with anyone being ‘on the run: bin Laden is no longer. Terrorists within al Qaeda were disorganized/put off balance not only by lack of bin Laden and his bajillions of money funding them, but also by loss of other leaders who touted, organized and engaged in criminal money-making activities from pirate sites to sex trafficking, to child trafficking, to illegal gambling, to porn, to illegal drug trade, to raise money for their cause. Embassies were closed for now, travel advisory announced, as we approach another anniversary of 9-11, and because the usual ‘chatter’ believed to be coming from those intent on terrorist acts, has exceeded ‘the usual’ in tone and content. We’ve had more than one embassy invasion and harm over the decades. It appears prudent.
Just my .02
I dont think it’s necessary for any pundit to use hysterical projections.
