Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Hospitalized With Blood Clot

The New York Times reports that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was hospitalized today with a blood clot stemming from a concussion she suffered earlier this month, according to a State Department spokesman.

The Times:

Mrs. Clinton, who canceled most of her public events in recent weeks because of her concussion, was at a follow-up exam Sunday when doctors discovered a blood clot, according to Philippe Reines, a spokesman for Mrs. Clinton.

“She is being treated with anticoagulants and is at New York-Presbyterian Hospital so that they can monitor the medication over the next 48 hours,” Mr. Reines said in a statement.

Reports of her concussion at the time when Mrs. Clinton was supposed to testify before Congress on the deadly Sept. 11 Benghazi tragedy were viewed with some skepticism by some Republicans.

On December 18, appearing on Fox News Tuesday, syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer said:

Now that she’s supposed to speak to the Congress about this, she has this illness. Now, I am not going to say she doesn’t have one. I’d be happy to give her a neurologic exam, but in the absence of that, I’ll take her word. But there is something strange about this.

Very best wishes to Secretary Clinton. By all accounts she is a work horse and this has been an extremely difficult year. Probably best to ignore fringe sentiments that suggest otherwise. Squeeky wheels; you either oil them or they break. In this case the wheels of the Rs are in dis-repair and they need spokes of the wheels to be trued.

I hope we can take a break from pointing at the evil empire and point to what is good. There is so much that is good right now. We are on the edge of massive prosperity. Neither Dems or Repubs will stop it. This is an incredibly exciting time to be alive. Happy New Year to all.

    Comment well taken, KP

    Happy New Year

Oh My!…Thanks Dorian for posting this, my prayers are with her for a speedy and complete recovery.

I will refrain from expressing my true sentiments for Krauthammer since vulgarity is not allowed on TMV.
Having a blood clot on the brain is a very serious matter.
She needs some TLC now and rest. My prayers are with her. She is one cool lady!

Recall, blood clots are not necessarily serious. A blood clot in the brain — or lungs — as a result of trauma or deep vein thrombosis (DVT) are always serious. However, blood clots from bed rest are very common and not, themselves, serious. Typically, they are treated with increased activity, hydration and an asprin. What did Hillary experience? I have no idea, but if it was serious we will be hearing about it very soon. I remain positive.

She had a concussion first. When she went in for a follow up, they discovered it. That says to me..on the brain.

    New York Times:

An expert not involved in Mrs. Clinton’s care said that prompt treatment usually dissolves the clots, but that untreated they can become more worrisome and even lead to a hemorrhage inside the brain.

Blood-thinning drugs can dissolve the clots, said Dr. David Langer, a brain surgeon and an associate professor at the Cushing Neuroscience Institutes at the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System.

Patients may need to stay on the drugs for weeks or months to make sure the problem does not recur, he said.

    Then from Huffington Post:

Clinton’s doctors discovered the clot Sunday while performing a follow-up exam, her spokesman, Philippe Reines, said. He would not elaborate on the location of the clot but said Clinton is being treated with anti-coagulants and would remain at New York-Presbyterian Hospital for at least the next 48 hours so doctors can monitor the medication.

Appears that little information has been given and perhaps there is some press speculation or assumptions (?)

  • sheknows

Well it is very possible she has the clot elsewhere, and I may have connected the two prematurely. Let’s hope it will dissolve without further incidence regardless.

I wish her a speedy and full recovery.

The NY Times is a liberal rag. The NY Post and Fox has it right. Medical reports be damned!

    Speedy recovery!

I have had blood clots in my legs after being very dehydrated (endurance sport in heat) and then sitting around afterward or traveling on a long flight. Typically, the area of the clot becomes reddened and itches/aches and is warm. Further testing as a result of the symptoms would be a diagnostic ultrasound. Overweight people are more succeptible to blood clots and if they are in deep veins they would require blood thinners and less activity, more rest. This chances of her clot being the result of a concussion are slim. More likely, she was dehydrated, had the faint/fall, then was put on bed rest resulting in a blood clot. This is quite common. These days you will see hospital patients with pumps on their calves that regulalry squeeze the muscles. That is to prevent blood pooling while resting in bed. The clots that are being prevented would be unrelated to the reasons the patients are in bed to begin with. I don’t know where her blood clot is/was, but if I were speculating I would guess her leg and that it is unrelated to her head injury and directly related to dehydration and bed rest.

Actually Fox is the one that has it completely wrong in this posting… Fox is cited on their take that Hilary was faking her illness because of Benghazi.

Also if the flu continues to be a vengeful as what many are reporting… before this season is over, they may have much greater empathy for what Mrs. Clinton has gone through.

Here is an example of one that is starting to come out from the flu..

Finally seeing thru the fog of monster flu 2012… It has morphed into something like strep today…. I fell into the tunnel of death on Thurs nite, just now coming out(sun)..and I’m on tamaflu….. So please wash yer hands! Cover your mouth, wear a HazMat suit. Beware!!! It is the worst illness I have ever had.

It is a small self view that seeks to humiliate and inflame when others are suffering…

This is a bad flu, but the shot is a particularly good one this season. I am definitely getting the shot very soon.

Update on Hilary Clinton: I really like her and wish her the best.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Doctors treating Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton for a blood clot say the clot formed in her head but they stress that they are confident she will make a full recovery.

In an update Monday on Clinton’s condition, her doctors say the blood clot did not result in a stroke, or neurological damage. The clot is located in the vein in the space between the brain and the skull behind the right ear.

Clinton’s doctors say that to help dissolve the clot, they are treating her with blood thinners. They say she will be released once the medication dose has been established.

In their update, the doctors say the 65-year-old secretary of state is making excellent progress and is in good spirits.

  • KP

Great news that the clot is in her head — not brain. A clot in the brain is a stroke, specifically, cerebral infarction. That would be quite rare due to concussion and would lead to some degree of brain death. Very good news indeed.
