I’ve just finished listening to an absolutely fascinating audiobook, and one that seems uniquely appropriate for listening to in the car.
It’s called Horatio’s Drive and is based on a PBS program about the first man to drive a car across the country in the year 1903. The story was produced by Ken Burns and the audio version features Tom Hanks as Horatio Nelson Jackson and many other great voice talents to provide flavor.
Just imagine what it was like, driving a 20 horsepower vehicle across thousands of miles of land, in many cases going through areas that had never even seen a car before. Even more amazing is the fact that while most people who tried this ride did so after much planning and with signficant support from the automaker, Jackson did so on a $ 50 bet and left after just a few days of planning driving in a used car.
As you follow the story you not only get the story of his ride across the nation but the feel for what the country was like back then. It’s well worth checking out and is perfect for a long drive in your own car.
