WTVJ NBC6.net reports:
LIBERTY CITY, Fla. — Federal agents are conducting a terrorism-related investigation in Liberty City.
Agents were at the Scott housing projects in the area of 15th Avenue and Northwest 62nd Street.
Several streets were cordoned off during the search.
A Miami Police Department SWAT team assisted federal agents in the search. Armed agents could be seen in the area.
Several warrants were served at the housing complex, NBC 6’s Patricia Andreu reported.
FBI officials cordoned off an area in Liberty City on Thursday as part of what FBI Director Robert Mueller called a significant terror-related investigation.
Mueller, appearing on CNN’s Larry King Live program, said he couldn’t comment extensively on the investigation, which he said involved both arrest warrants and search warrants.
About 20 FBI agents were on the scene at NW 15th Avenue, between 62nd and 63rd streets.
”There is no imminent threat to Miami or any other area because of these operations,” Richard Kolko, spokesman for FBI headquarters in Washington, told The Associated Press. He declined further comment.
A search warrant and other documents were sealed, Kolko said.
Cedric Thomas, an owner of Thomas Produce Market, said the area around his store was teeming with federal agents.
”There is a ton of guys in uniforms moving around, blocking the streets. I’m not sure what they are doing,” said Thomas, whose store, a Liberty City institution, is at 1376 NW 62nd St., near the area cordoned off by police.
State officials declined to elaborate on the investigation.
”We fully support all state and federal initatives that protect out community, including the investigation and prosecution of domestic terrorism,” the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office said in a statement about the raid.
