Gov. Mark Sanford, Missing for Four Days, Has Been Found

If this is not an example of the explanation being even weirder than the thing being explained, I’m stumped for what would be (emphasis mine):

The whereabouts of Gov. Mark Sanford was unknown for nearly four days, and some state leaders question who was in charge of the executive office.

But Sanford’s office told the lieutenant governor’s office Monday afternoon that Sanford has been reached and he is fine, said Frank Adams, head of Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer’s office on aging.

Neither the governor’s office nor the State Law Enforcement Division, which provides security for governors, had been able to reach Sanford after he left the mansion Thursday in a black SLED Suburban SUV, said Sen. Jake Knotts and three others familiar with the situation but declined to be identified.

Sanford’s last known whereabouts had been near Atlanta because a mobile telephone tower picked up a signal from his phone, authorities said. His office now knows where he is, Adams said.

First lady Jenny Sanford told The Associated Press earlier Monday her husband has been gone for several days and she did not know where.

She said she was not concerned.

The governor’s state and personal phones had been turned off and he had not responded to phone or text messages since at least the weekend, a source familiar with the situation said.

Most mobile phones cannot be tracked if they are turned off.

Jenny Sanford said the governor said he needed time away from their children to write something.

And in the event of State or family emergency? For someone who has presidential ambitions, this is at least a tad odd. Even understanding the need for privacy to “write something”, making no contact for four days when you are the Governor of a State…weird.

Whatever he wrote better be damn good. “The Audacity of Disappearing” ?

  • DLS

Maybe it was a “Dear Jane” letter or breakup text message to his mistress. The real composition time was how long it took him to compose _himself_ before deciding to send the note, then composing it and sending it. [grin]

It’s especially weird-sounding that he wanted to “get away from his children” to write this something, whatever it was. His children are grown. He’s not chasing after toddlers.

    It’s just odd.

  • StockBoySF

Maybe by “children” he was referring to the citizens of his fine state.

I’m surprised his wife wasn’t worried. Which leads me to believe that she could contact him (secret celll phone?) if needed.

StockBoySF – Maybe by “children” he was referring to the citizens of his fine state.

Well as one of the “children” in this state, I will say that this is a bit concerning. Its the thing that all the folks down here are talking about this morning, and of course, everyone seems to know the answer as to why he was gone and what he was doing. I’m sure we’ll know more about this in the coming days, but at that time most folks probably won’t be interested anymore.

      • markmarkmark

As one of those citizens, how did you feel about him saying no to dollars that could have helped your struggling neighbors?

        • jchem

I will tell you that he’s a very well liked person down here, even to the struggling folks you eluded to. I don’t believe for a moment that anyone in this state thought the stimulus money was in serious danger. The state legislature wrote their own override in the bill so it was coming regardless of what Sanford said or did. Sanford was doing some double speak, saying ‘no’ to it one way while allowing it anyway. If he was serious about turning it down, he would have pursued this further in the courts, but he didn’t. His toughest critics on that issue have been folks within his own party, simply because he wouldn’t refuse it outright. I’m happy it came, but I’m a bit concerned about what lies ahead in a couple of years when the jobs provided by the stimulus money run out of funding. And when that happens, the local pols here will do their best to portray the Feds as the enemy.

Much of the talk going on now about him going AWOL illustrates pretty well the ongoing power struggle between the Gov and the Legislature specifically, and the Repub party generally. From what I hear (I’ve only been here a year), the Republican primary for governor is one of the ugliest campaigns out there. All of this is being used for posturing, since many of the loudest voices are in the race.

You people are so naive to believe what you hear in the media.

State law enforcement, family and staff knew his where abouts the whole time.

Mark Sanford has very loyal family, staff and security.

He also is a fine father, Governor and public servant.

His finger is on the pulse of the state at ALL times.

The left is so afraid of his potential bid for the big job that they saw an opening and created a media blitz about this.

    Wake up people.

    • StockBoySF

1stgenmill: “He also is a fine father, Governor and public servant.”

Yup he sure is a fine father. Even missing Father’s Day with his four sons.

“State law enforcement, family and staff knew his whereabouts the whole time”. Can you provide proof, or a neutral source(s), for this statement? It might change some minds if you could.

If your statement is accurate that his whereabouts were known, why would his wife say that he had been gone for several days and that she did not know where he was? Was she lying? If so, why? Why did state law enforcement make the statements they made?

Ha. Bet you feel stupid now huh? Shouldn’t be so sure of yourself when speaking about politicians… 🙂

    • Jerba

You must have been in the know. We dummies did not guess a thing…
His finger was right there on the pulse of somebody…Not the State of SC.

      Well…….as of 6/25/09….I stand corrected.

What a shame……..and I do mean SHAME to the fullest .

I must say…..didn’t see that one coming.

  • oldestchild

    How old are his sons?

  • The least they could would be to give a more plausible explanation. Why didn’t they just say that he was out looking for Obama’s birth certificate? He could then convince 19% of the country that he was doing something that was important enough to be out-of-pocket. Or maybe he’s just Going Galt with the rest of the teabaggers.

  • StockBoySF

jchem, yes it is concerning that he seemed to have disappeared for four days, as it would be for any state governor who disappeared in a similar fashion. If my own governor disappeared I would no longer give him my support….. Being guv is a big job with big responsibilities and commitment.

  • reluctantrealist

Face the facts friend, your guv is up to no good. Period. I have known people over the years who disappear from time to time, and they were always up to no good. Every time. ALWAYS. I think we can narrow it down to: (a) booze, (b) drugs, (c) mistress, or (d) gay something or other. Or a combo of the aforementioned.

I rather doubt if this is over. This guy stupidly left blood in the water, so the media sharks will be circling around.

    • 1stgenmill

reluctantrealist ……I really have nothing that I can say…………totally blew me outta the water.

      Total shock.

Now…just very sorry for his wife and kids to have to experience this.

  • markmarkmark

And you call us naive? Wow. Baaaaah.

    • 1stgenmill

Crow does not taste very good………..touche’

    • 1stgenmill

      SCHomie ……no…I don’t feel stupid…just disappointed.
