Do You Get Facebook Envy?

Have you ever trolled through your news feed on Facebook, observed the seemingly perfect lives of your “friends” and felt that your own life wasn’t as fulfilling as theirs?

If you’ve had such feelings, it appears you’re not alone.

A study conducted jointly by two German universities found rampant
envy on Facebook, the world’s largest social network that now has over
one billion users and has produced an unprecedented platform for social

The researchers found that one in three people felt worse after
visiting the site and more dissatisfied with their lives, while people
who browsed without contributing were affected the most.

If you attach much credibility to the postings of those Facebook friends who seem to use most of their posts to brag about how wonderful their lives, children, parents, spouses, children, and vacations are, I could understand how you might develop a case of “Facebook envy.”

But my experience suggests that the postings of some on Facebook are the…

    Mark, this is so spot on. If we are not careful we can end a visit to facebook feeling a little bummed out. It’s one of the reasons I limit my visits!

    This is one reason I don’t have a facebook page, if that’s what it’s called. I get enough of it in Christmas letters – and they cover an entire year! But because postage has gone up so much, the slush is limited. Can’t imagine reading it every day.

    I suppose much of the FB experience has to do with the quality of the “friends” one has adopted. My own experiences are on the whole positive and I’ve only unfriended one person. He was posting tea party nonsense non-stop and I finally grew tired of seeing it. I still consider him a friend but his political naivete turned halitosis needed an ending. My news feed is pretty enjoyable most of the time.

    I think facebook is what you bring to it…one can sculpt the experience by choosing friends and interest…it is an interesting social experiment…

    Some of the things i really like is the wide diversity of people from around the world..Getting to know women from the “axis of evil” has been rich.

    I’ve had periods of dropping out, and coming back….
    Made some good friends and had to establish healthy boundaries with a couple people.

    There are pockets on fb that i avoid, and there are a few places that are like watering holes in lush oasis…such as Dr. E’s post are often an oasis for the soul..

    Rarely feel envy from facebook friends, just trust we live unique lives,….yet sometimes find old feelings surfacing from family, especially the ones that are fundamentalist… It is true..we dont get to chose our family, but we can our friends….

    No one should be on facebook without the companion of the Tao Te Ching as underpinning..

    ” “Stop thinking, and end your problems.
    What difference between yes and no?
    What difference between success and failure?
    Must you value what others value,
    avoid what others avoid?
    How ridiculous!

    Other people are excited,
    as though they were at a parade.
    I alone don’t care,
    I alone am expressionless,
    like an infant before it can smile.

    Other people have what they need;
    I alone possess nothing.
    I alone drift about,
    like someone without a home.
    I am like an idiot, my mind is so empty.

    Other people are bright;
    I alone am dark.
    Other people are sharp;
    I alone am dull.
    Other people have purpose;
    I alone don’t know.
    I drift like a wave on the ocean,
    I blow as aimless as the wind.

    I am different from ordinary people.
    I drink from the Great Mother’s breasts.”

    Lao Tzu, Tao Te Ching

    Is there a movement for non republicans to quit using facebook since Mark Zuckerberg announced his political partisanship in intention to donate large sums of money to Chris Kristys campaign?
