Demanding 2008 Candidates Take The “Clean Money Pledge”

unity08.gif
The Unity 08 independents are launching campaign called the “Clean Money Pledge on their website asking voters to pledge to only vote for presidential candidates who raise the majority of his/her campaign war chests in small-dollar contributions.

You can read the group’s pledge here. This is the explanation as to why this is important. They offer this FAQ on the importance of clean money (in contrast to the FU candidates often reply when asked about only using clean money). And this is the letter Unity is sending to prospective candidates letting them know that they’re serious.

Sounds nice, so when both presidential candidates come up and have both taken too much money from corporations, we don’t vote? Mind you, I think it’s a fine idea, and I might even sign, but I have the feeling that means I won’t be voting in ’08.

  • As many here have suggested, publicly financed elections are the real solution to the corruption of our electoral politics. I favor paying legislators a fair salary that attracts quality leaders, and banning outright their taking of any other money, from anyone, for any purpose. No speakers fees, book deals, Cheney-style “delayed compensation.” Nothing, nada, zip.

GreenDreams exactly! Let them win on the strength of their ideas, not on the number of minutes their millions gives them on TV. It would also allow them to, you know, WORK, instead of spending their time fundraising. The problem? The people who would have to pass such a measure are the ones least interested in it passing.

The problem with special interest money is that it prevents elected officials from acting in the best interest of the voters. I am a big fan of public funding for elections—we might actually see real leadership emerge.

  • “Goal Three, our minimum goal, is to effect major change and reform in the 2008 national elections by influencing the major parties to adopt the core features of our national agenda.”

Well, and where’s their ‘national agenda’? What’s their position on Iraq? What kind of healthcare system do they want? Do they support tax reform, and who do they think shall pay more and who less? All they say as an answer is: “The American Agenda will be a major online initiative through which our online supporters will select the crucial issues facing our nation”. Yeah, sure. Online! We know from several surprising poll results how good this will work. And what if the forces behind ‘Unity 08’ don’t like that ‘democratically’ chosen agenda? Guess they will simply the ne party they created.

No, ‘Unity 08’ is a trojan horse. I don’t know about the intentions of the powers behind it, but this can’t work as advertised. Does anybody believe those anonymouses can win a presidential election No. They will just spoil the elction for one of both parties. And I guess that’s exactly the hidden goal behind this venture. Don’t fall for this fraud!

  • Ya sure

    GreenDreams is a bit blindsided

but to be real about it – you don’t think this has a chance of passing do you? Both parties want to get elected.
