Jon Stewart describes Congress as “a fetid pool of corruption and stupidity, located at the intersection of Entitlement Avenue and Abject Dereliction of Duty Lane” in a new segment he calls “I Give Up.” The issue: extending health benefits for 9-11 first responders.

Although the bill (which was introduced last year) had an overwhelmingly majority in the House, 255-159, it fell short of the necessary two-thirds majority imposed by “suspension calendar” rules. Some voted against it because it included “taxes”. According to CBS/AP:

To pay the bill’s estimated $7.4 billion cost over 10 years, the legislation would have prevented foreign multinational corporations incorporated in tax haven countries from avoiding tax on income earned in the U.S.

Sometimes you really do wonder what is going on in their minds when they vote. Oh, right. No you don’t. It’s an election year: November is top of mind.
