This Northern Ireland cad — MP Iris Robinson cheated on her husband with then 19 year-old Kirk McCambley (she was 59) — is not only female, she’s also the most famous homophobe in the UK:
There can be no viler act, apart from homosexuality and sodomy, than sexually abusing innocent children.
There must be sufficient confidence that the community has the best possible protection against such perverts. […]
I cannot think of anything more sickening than a child being abused. It is comparable to the act of homosexuality. I think they are all comparable. I feel totally repulsed by both.
But her transgression was more than mere sex with a teenager young enough to be her grandson, she also took thousands in kickbacks from a questionable loan she gave him:
McCambley says he had heard of the two well-known property developers who each gave Iris Robinson £25,000 which she passed on to him, but had never met them. (It is not known on what terms the men gave the money to the politician, though questions will certainly be asked about the fact that Mrs Robinson, around the same time, was lobbying on one of the men’s behalf over a prospective development.) There was one more thing – McCambley was to give her a £5,000 kickback in cash so that she could pay off her own debts. He did.
Where is God in all this?
By the end of 2008 the relationship was over. “Just cut links with Kirk. God’s word was very clear on it. He was reasonably OK on it. I am not,” she texted to Black. But despite her belated invocation of God, the real reason seems to have been money – Mrs Robinson wanted the investment back. “It seems cruel but I am not going to soften until he has paid back the 45k and he has got until Christmas,” read another text.
The money was not, at that point, to be returned to the developers, but £20,000 was to be paid to Mrs Robinson’s pentecostal church, the Light ‘n’ Life Free Methodist Tabernacle in Dundonald, on the outskirts of Belfast, and another £20,000 to repay her debts. Black, himself a former chaplain who was increasingly unhappy with the arrangement, texted his employer: “Where is God in all of this?”
Her husband, the country’s First Minister Peter Robinson, is also in trouble for her sins. Iris Robinson has released a statement blaming it all on depression. “I grieve that I have damaged my profession in Christ, but I am comforted that He was able to forgive even me.”
McCambley, so far, appears to be faring ok. Joe.My.God:
Robinson’s young lover, now christened “Kirk Diggler” in reference to Mark Wahlberg’s horse-cocked character in Boogie Nights, has become an instant folk hero in the UK, becoming the subject of numerous Facebook fan pages, most of which were created to mock Robinson. British gay glossy Attitude Magazine is offering young Kirk the cover of their next issue, calling him “incredibly hot.” Additionally, a campaign is underway to make the 1968 Simon & Garfunkel classic, Mrs. Robinson, the #1 song on this week’s UK pop chart, aided by a radio request effort and an iTunes download promotion. Nobody beats the Brits when it comes to schadenfreude. Nobody.
