Sam Brownback doesn’t trust that Leavenworth is up to the task of keeping Kansans safe from former Gitmo detainees suspected of being terrorists but never charged or tried as such. They might escape. They might get out of their cells and hurt the prison guards or the other inmates. It’s just too risky to keep suspected terrorists in there with rapists, murderers, and serial killers.
“We don’t want them here,” Brownback said. “They should be treated with dignity and humanely, but it shouldn’t [...] be here.”
They wouldn't last 10 minutes in the federal prison in Leavenworth. Sending them there would be the same as sticking them in the electric chair. They'd be better off in the military prison…locked in the basement with the rest of the crazies.
I've toured the military prison and spoken to the guards about the federal prison. Leavenworth fed is a bad bad place.
Leavenworth is a military prison. This is a military problem. They belong in Leavenworth and Brownback belongs in a retirement home.
Bark, bark, bark at the Icky Republicans.
Of course they will act like NIMBYs _and_ oppose any move by Obama of the prisoners out of Cuba, but that's to be expected. What also is noticeable (though Kathy neglects it, “surprisingly”) is that a number of Democrats also object to having terrorists hosted in the localities they ["]represent["] — though many in the public also don't want them anywhere within the USA.
I always liked my joke that since the anti-nuclear nut-cases are holding sway especially strongly these days, why not use Yucca Mountain to host our fine friends currently in Cuba?
On a more serious note, not all people are foolish NIMBYs. Some places have always been delighted to receive “corrections” work and the money that accompanies it, and that includes even some here in hard Blue Michigan (there is support for, not only opposition to, use of the Standish prison and the money that would come to equip it to house the terrorists).
