A tragic story out of Iraq today as a soldier has been arrested for shooting five of his fellow soldiers. We want to avoid too much speculation at this point but early reports do suggest that the suspect was being treated for stress.
This is an increasing problem: as troops are sent back to Iraq over and over again, the stress levels begin to rise. Above and beyond the issues involved in being in combat you now have the stress placed on the families and the worries over that.
Obviously this is not the place to open a debate over Iraq policy, but it is a debate that is increasingly important for us to have.
This is truly a very sad report and (hopefully) very eye opening to the reality of PTSD. My father is in a nursing home in Florida… he still to this day has nightmares from being in Vietnam. I have a very dear friend who served in Bosnia and finished a tour in Iraq about a year ago. He too has nightmares from serving… I have personally witnessed him having nightmares and waking up in absolute horror.
Any soldier who serves in any war should never return to civil life before serving atleast a year on a base stateside in an effort to slowly re-introduce them back into the world.
what do you expect from the poor guy?..3 tours in a battle field 15 months each and then you expect him to stay sane?..Dick Cheney should be sent to serve a month or so..
question: had this soldier gone crazy and killed 5 Iraqi civilians would we have even heard about it?
