I really tried to not add my two cents to the Obama / Leno after-action report but I have to inject one thought into the maelstrom of pundit activity… did anyone else notice that Obama never really answered a question? He sounded good and said most of the right things but when push came to shove President Obama punted the ball away.
The biggest example:
Leno asked Obama if he agreed with the 90% tax hike by Congress on the A.I.G. bonus. President Obama replied to Leno’s question with the following non-answer:
“Well, look, I understand Congress’ frustrations, and they’re responding to, I think, everybody’s anger. But I think that the best way to handle this is to make sure that you’ve closed the door before the horse gets out of the barn. And what happened here was the money has already gone out and people are scrambling to try to find ways to get back at them.”
Huh? Really, is that your final answer? Are you sure that you don’t want to phone a friend? Mr. President, you are a very smart man but you either did not get the point or wanted to bypass the point of the question. Leno was asking if you agreed or disagreed with Congress’ plan of taxing the A.I.G. bonuses after the fact. A simple yes or no would have sufficed – there is no horse, door or barn in the scenario.
I supported and voted for Barack Obama. I still believe he was and still is the best choice to lead our country at this point in history. However, he has got to do a better job of leading by making decisions that are not going to make some people happy. Less fluff and circumstance; more deciding – hmmm, sounds like what might be needed is a third term of George W. Bush.
