While Republicans and other Clinton haters may be able to milk “E-Mail Gate” for a little while longer, the Benghazi-Gate folks may not be able to make much more political hay out of some 300 e-mails from Hillary Clinton’s private e-mail account that were recently turned over to the “permanent” Republican-controlled House Committee rummaging through investigating the 2012 attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya.
The New York Times reports this morning that the turned-over e-mails reveal that then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her aides were “closely monitoring the fallout from the tragedy,” but that:
They provided no evidence that Mrs. Clinton, as the most incendiary Republican attacks have suggested, issued a “stand down” order to halt American forces responding to the violence in Benghazi, or took part in a broad cover-up of the administration’s response, according to senior American officials.
Of course, these e-mails, or any additional information absolving Hillary Clinton or the Obama administration of any sinister — even criminal — conspiracy or cover-up in the Benghazi attack, will not keep Republicans from launching yet additional so-called investigations, especially now that Clinton may be running in the 2016 presidential elections.
Why would it stop them?
Half a dozen or more investigations that have yielded no incriminating results have not stopped the GOP from launching yet additional investigations.
A Republican-controlled House committee in a November 2014 report found no wrongdoing by Obama administration officials.
Debunking a series of persistent allegations hinting at dark conspiracies, the two-year investigation of the politically charged incident determined that there was no intelligence failure, no delay in sending a CIA rescue team, no missed opportunity for a military rescue, and no evidence the CIA was covertly shipping arms from Libya to Syria
CBS News added:
Many of its findings echo those of six previous investigations by various congressional committees and a State Department panel. The eighth Benghazi investigation is being carried out by a House Select Committee appointed in May.
Republicans are now doing everything in their power to link a moribund “Benghazi-Gate” to a nascent “E-Mail-Gate” to see if they can resuscitate an inane, torpid campaign issue against Hillary Clinton.
