Gas prices paid by Western Europeans are much higher than those paid by Americans. But at least Europeans get something good back for their pain at the pump—first rate public transportation infrastructures. What’s our own return from gas prices that have risen almost a buck a gallon in recent months?
In Praise Of Gas Taxes
I know free markets generate
A host of things desirable
But when it comes to energy
They’re kind of unreliable.
The markets’ mix of greed and fear
With oil has spawned great dismay
I mean no disrespect, of course
But might there be a better way?
If gas costs rise because of taxes
And not to suit big traders’ dreams
The extra price consumers pay
Could fund big public transport schemes.
A buck a gallon paid to Sam
It’s true would add to drivers’ woes
But what comes back is better than
Enriching oil CEOs.
