Political Spin Debunked? Charts Suggest Health Care Law NOT the Biggest Tax Increase Ever
Are the charts and graphs debunking an important Republican attack line on the health care reform law? The GOP scuttlebutt is that the law represents the biggest tax increase ever.
But it doesn’t look that way.
But, as I’ve often noted here, facts now mean so little in our politics. Once upon a time people felt compelled to apply a little acting to twist facts. Now, many politicos and partisans don’t even bother. What matters is to take a political mantra and repeat it over and over, have it written again and again, then repeated over and over again. The facts are ignored.
If a picture is worth a thousand words, two graphs are worth a thousand partisan spins.

One can only hope that House and Senate Republicans keep showing up on the Sunday Morning talk shows and continue talking without interruption and/or correction.
They’re doing what the Democrats have been unable to do… They’re waking up the America People to what a total failure / absolute disaster the Republican Party has become.
Far be it for me to want them to stop
What this shows is you can spin statistics any way you want. TPM is using revenue effect, Ezra Klein is using % of GDP and my guess is the GOP is using absolute dollars. So I’m guessing they’re all technically correct depending what measure you’re using. It’s a dumb argument that is waged every time there’s a discussion about taxes.
The only problem I can see with that is that the Dems will get into office now without actually having to up their game, just on the merits of not being GOP. Sigh. I would like to see the party that loses an election cycle actually get, you know, better at running this country than just waiting for the other guys to fumble the ball.
Seems like by now we’d be clued into the dangers of a disinformed electorate, yet the spin machine is still churning and whirling at full tilt – with the usual suspects at the controls. Just imagine the positive things we could accomplish in this country with an educated and well informed electorate!
What? The GOP is lying?
Say it ain’t so, Joe!
Say it ain’t mental snarl, Karl!
Say it’s not ****, Mitt!
