There are incidents in life that are so heinous that it takes more than just a vanilla-flavored “how can you be so despicable” story to illustrate it and condemn such.
When such craven acts are committed by a celebrity — a hero to more than 20 million folks — it takes more than just a little blogger to make any kind of an impact.
When the dastardly, hurtful words are hurled against a young, defenseless woman, it takes a woman to accurately express the injustice, revulsion, the humiliation, the suffering and the damage that was done.
So, who better to express such emotions than “a woman who has been viciously slashed by Rush Limbaugh,” and who can say from experience, “I can tell you, it’s no fun.”
I could quote or paraphrase Maureen Dowd’s words, but that would only take away from her writing, from her question, “Have you no shame, Rush?”
Please read it here
At the end of Dowd’s article, there is an “update”: “On Saturday evening, Rush Limbaugh posted a statement on his Web site, which can be read here.”
It is telling that Limbaugh’s statement is not referred to as an “apology.”
On this, perhaps the following comment to a related TMV story says it best:
Rush Limbaugh only apologized for the choice of words that he used. He didn’t apologize for lying about Ms.Flukes’ testimony. He didn’t apologize for mounting a personal attack on Ms.Fluke, he denied that he had. He didn’t apologize for the days that it apparently took him to realize that he had chosen the words poorly, days that saw him repeat the poorly chosen words. Nor did he try to explain the delay.
All that I can see that he said was that in the future he will express his hateful misogyny in more pleasing terms, ones less likely to cost him advertisers and money.
