As Nature calms down, Americans face a weekend of man- and woman-made devastation as Rick Perry and Sarah Palin cloud up on the political landscape.
The “Going Rogue” short-term governor will be pouring “a full-throated defense of the Tea Party” over Iowa today while critics start to take a closer look at the Texas cyclone’s proposal to dismantle government before his first GOP debate appearance next week.
In a book last year titled “Fed Up,” Perry sounded his manifesto: “It is not enough to be fed up. We must act.”
Among the American institutions he finds hard to swallow is Social Security, “something we have been forced to accept for more than 70 years now,” one of the New Deal social programs that “never died, and like a bad disease, they have spread.”
In the GOP alternate universe, will other contenders even politely question the Governor’s Nutsy Fagan version of history or ignore those rants and spend their time piling on Barack Obama?
Will Mitt Romney, whose lead has evaporated in the Perry sandstorm, take him on or leave it to Jon Huntsman, who has nothing to lose, to sound the only voice of sanity?
Destroy Social Security?
Do “what” with the old people?
Oh I see, let them go out and find a job.
This is the Republican Party, work grandma to DEATH.
So what exactly will it take for the rest of America to figure out that Perry is in fact a crackpot? That the GOP is riddled with crackpots? People are slow to get a clue. Some people never get a clue.
Gee. I wonder if Perry knows what most old people died of BEFORE Social Security.
Hypothermia.
(You can look it up.)
Hart Williams-
Yes and when Ronald “Republican God” Reagan closed all the state run mental institutions in California, putting the patients out onto the streets after he became Governor, about 30% died of exposure. He then sold the Hospital buildings to business. The one in Modesto California went to Gallo Wine for One Dollar. Gallo then moved those wooden structures into the fields as transient Mexican farm labor housing. Pitiful unhealthy dumps to be sure, but business got a boost!
As long as we’re talking about inconvenient truths, let’s not forget how many street people have historically been veterans. Let’s also keep in mind that the rate of unemployment for returning vets is much higher than the average figures we are seeing. Apparently their importance to patriotic propagandizing only goes so far.
Perry is not going to survive long in under the full scrutiny of the presidential spotlight. A post earlier talked of Christine O’Donnell and how she is not relevant. She is relevant because a large section of the GOP seem to vote for some zany candidates, and while Perry is no rookie, his brand of politics won’t fly in the nation as a whole. If he gets the GOP nod, which might happen if the trends in GOP voting continues, Obama will eat him alive in the general election.
