Berlin Wall: 50 Years Later

I am sure we’re all enjoying our weekends and there is no reason not to continue to do so.

It is worth remembering that 50 years ago today was the start of the Berlin Wall.

It is also worth celebrating that the wall no longer exists.

I just finished reading an excellent book on the topic and suggest it to anyone interested in the topic.

In Berlin 1961 we see how the wall was just one part of a much more complex geopolitical game. We also learn how missed signals and perhaps some mistakes by a young new President (based in part on bad advice from more experienced hands) might have caused us to miss out on Denente 10 years earlier.

I was reading a fiction book that described all the money (billions) and resources the Army Corps of Engineers poured into the infrastructure of West Germany prior to the wall coming down so tanks could move and maneuver, roads widened/fixed bridges built. Too bad they didn’t need tank mobility here in the U.S.

I spoke with a young lady from East Germany in Bavaria, January 1990. She had concerns about the collapse of East Germany and what it meant for the people. She was not so friendly to Americans. Sometimes I wonder what she is doing now and how her life turned out.

As much as I enjoy the repartee so far, I’d like to return to the post for a moment if it’s ok. The story about the Berlin wall reminds me of other “missed signals and perhaps some mistakes” pertaining to the Vietnam War, a was which was utterly unecessary. Too bad we aren’t smarter, we wouldn’t have so much wasted history behind us.

Again I’d suggest checking out the book.

It also examines all of the internal politics that Nikita was dealing with and the problems that caused

“She was not so friendly to Americans”

I lived in former East Germany for 5 years…I experienced the exact opposite…from a much larger sample of people than 1.
