More To Weiner Story (Yup…. He Lied)

Update: Weiner just confessed that he did what he was accused of. He did take the original picture and he did intend to send it as a direct message (IE a private email) and accidentally sent it as a tweet (IE a public posting).

He also confessed that sent many pictures and had online ‘relationships’ with many women over the last 3 years and that he has continued some of these after his marriage.

It’s still largely to me an issue between himself and his family with regard to the activities and between himself and his constiuents as to his future status (he has said flatly he will not resign).

But it’s another example of lying making things much much worse.

I do wonder how the left leaning web sites that have defended him will react and whether they will apologize for attacking Brietbart since what he said was entirely true.

Weiner was asked if he would apologize to Breitbart and he responded with a general ‘sorry to everyone’ kind of answer (couldn’t really expect Weiner to apologize to someone he hates).

******************************************************

I’m already on record of not really caring what Congresscritter Weiner did with his Twitter or Facebook accounts but it now appears there is a new development.

Media reports indicate that a second woman has emerged with perhaps 200 picture of the Congressman with some rather suggestive comments.

Again, by all accounts he was single when he sent these tweets and/or Facebook messages so it just comes down to him being a bit sleazy (hardly unusual for a member of Congress).

However it is worth discussing in that when the story emerged his reaction was odd (saying he did not send the pic but not denying it was him) and this could be the reason.

He has scheduled a press conference for later today, theoretically to comment.

Here’s video of the press conference:

UPDATE: It turns out ABC News was about to do a major story on another woman — and had interviewed her.

Or maybe to resign? One Twitter pic, benefit of the doubt. 200? Not so much. This is beginning to look like a low grade Elliot Spitzer situation.

I still think we ought quit the political undie sniffing, but if we’re going to sniff undies, then there need to be consequences…I guess.

There’s an adage in political PR mgmt circles…if you can keep it contained to 3 days airtime or less, you’ll make it through undamaged. I believe today is day 10.

  3. PATRICK EDABURN says:

I am suspecting he will not resign but I could be wrong. He just strikes me as not the type to resign and his district is Democratic enough he doesn’t have to

  4. Indefatigably says:

Yes, Democrats as a whole rarely have to resign for sexual scandals, lying, tax evasion, graft, etc.

It is expected of them, after all.

  5. PATRICK EDABURN says:

So he won’t resign but I find his nuancing interesting. When asked about sexual relationships with the women he says ‘we were never in the same room together’.

Makes you at least wonder if a new shoe is going to drop.

Again, it’s up to his wife to keep him or divorce him and it’s up to the voters in his district to let him stay or demand he go.

But he sure made this a lot worse.

  6. slamfu says:

What a moron. He was hitting on women as a single man. Just freaking say that then for gods sake. By playing coy he just made it a bigger deal than it is.

And its usually more palatable for liberals to have bedroom antics aired in public because they don’t spend 99% of their time on soapboxes preaching about “Family Values” while boffing the secretary or anything in a skirt. Its just more entertaining when social conservative icons get caught with their pants down. Like the annoying vegetarian you catch scarfing down a Big Mac.

  7. Indefatigably says:

Get real Salmfu. The Left and it’s lapdog press protect Dems and crucify Reps.

Kennedy? Rangel? Geithner? Murtha? Murderers, thugs, tax cheats, embezzlers, etc., and all maintained great standing in the Democratic Party.

Heck, you can even get BJ’s from 22-year old interns in the Oval Office as President, then commit perjury to a Grand Jury while being a sitting (Democratic) President, and that is just A-OK. Even NOW will back you up then!

Is your point that is what you EXPECT from your Democratic Leadership?

  8. casualobserver says:

Who’s calling who a moron……he admitted he coniinued to do so AFTER he got married.

It’s a coverup, it’s an apology to Breitbart, it’s overwrought.

    Where isroro with her retraction?

  9. EEllis says:

It’s funny how badly Breitbart was trashed, even tho in this case he was 100% accurate and declined to publish other inflamitory and questionable materials. Sure it is tabloid jornalism but Breitbart seemed to have better ethics than say Solon which published the name of the person who recieved the “tweet”. Many people owe him an apology lets see how many have the integrety to do so.

  10. roro80 says:

    A few things:

    1) Well, I guess I was wrong. Damnit.

    2) I hope all his online flirting was consentual. There’s currently nothing to indicate it wasn’t. ETA: if it wasn’t, then he’s a jerk, and a criminal. If it was all consentual, then he’s merely a really bad husband.

    3) This isn’t like Spitzer or Vitter because sending pics of your junk to someone who wants pics of your junk isn’t illegal, while prostitution is. Really huge difference.

    4) So I guess to some there’s no difference between not having sex but showing your stuff to someone, and having sex, or paying for sex. This makes no sense to me.

    5) I strongly disagree that Breitbart acted with any ethics. Let’s pretend for one second that Weiner were a woman. Telling this hypothetical woman that you’re going to release naked pictures of her on the internet little by little until she says what she wants you to say? Um, that’s sexual coersion. I know there are currently very lax laws on such things, but this is something that absolutely should change. Releasing naked pictures of anyone without their consent should not be legal, and it should not be considered “ethical” in any way to coerse someone into anything by threatening to do so.

  11. dduck says:

I wonder if Chris Lee (NY26) will demand his seat back if Weiner doesn’t resign. Lee must feel like an idiot for resigning over his belt-high trolling photo. Oh, well, at least Rangle paid his back taxes and gave up the extra apartments.

  12. roro80 says:

    Where isroro with her retraction?

Yeah, buddy, until you make with the $1000 you owe me, I don’t owe you sh*t. I admitted I was incorrect in my prediction here, although I will say that I conceded all along it could be true, even though I didn’t think it was. Breitbart, as I mentioned before, gets credit for continuing to be an *sshole. Sexual coersion gets no props from me.

BTW, every time I mention said $1000, you scamper away. I imagine that will happen now as well, so I shan’t expect a reply.

  13. DLS says:

He wants to stay in office — ugh. Oh, well, he can still run for Mayor of New York (where it may or may not be a problem, in a big Dem city), and maybe Spitzer will then run for his House seat — befitting their images.

  14. DLS says:

    E. Ellis wrote:

It’s regrettable that he’s still being trashed, but not surprising; the same is true for those who actually try to defend Weiner’s garbage behavior. (Hiding it from his wife rather than lying about it is still deception atop the misconduct, incidentally, too.)

  15. casualobserver says:

Find a non- liberal to say HR 3 is solely social legislation without a substantial fiscal component and you can then imply I owe the LGBT ( not you) $1000. Until then, I don’t owe you sh@t.

Sexual coercion, huh. I suspect the phrase you are looking for is blackmail. But , let me get this straight….Breitbart can blackmail wiener into a confession only with leverage. Therefore, Breitbart must have something worse on wiener than what he just copped to. Boy, this IS getting interesting.

  16. marybluesky says:

The voters in his district can keep him or vote for someone else. I don’t care about anything except how he votes on legislation. But I hope his wife dumps his sorry butt immediately. He’s a loser and she deserves better.

  17. TheMagicalSkyFather says:

    Gcotharn won this round!

  18. TheMagicalSkyFather says:

dduck-Lee resigned not because of the craiglist trolling but to hide that he was hunting for transgender girls. It came out a few days after he resigned. He did not resign because of infidelity, nor did Clinton, Ensign, Vitter, Craig, Foley or the rest of them. Those that hunt within their own gender while acting “straight” if you will do step down though.

  19. TheMagicalSkyFather says:

Yea and Spitzer like Vitter, Edwards and Ensign actually committed crimes that involved sex. Weiner lied about online cheating/sexting which is actually not a crime. Sucks to be married to such a sleaze but not a crime.

  20. DaGoat says:

Pretty much agree with roro – if this was all consensual then it’s not a big deal except between him and his wife. If it wasn’t then I think that is grounds to call for his resignation.

  21. EEllis says:

Releasing naked pictures of anyone without their consent should not be legal

Yeah great except Wiener released them when he “published” them on twitter, or are you going with “he was to stupid to realize what he was doing so it shouldn’t count defense?”

It is my best guess that Breitbart made this whole thing up. It might not be the case, but that’s what I anticipate coming out.

Well I could call someone a bunch of names and then say “I could be wrong” but somehow that doesn’t seem to me to excuse the insult by originally adding a maybe to it.

  22. ShannonLeee says:

New media is no place for stupid men.

I’m on the fence when it comes to his resignation. While I believe everyone should have a certain privilege of privacy in their private life….this idiot went public with his junk….making his private life very public.

Dems needs to figure out if he is too much of a liability. Better to dump him quickly and let him try to come back later…than to keep him around and have him hurt the party.
It is bad enough having Rangel still around.

  23. casualobserver says:

I predict he will resign ……mark the date.

  24. roro80 says:

Find a non- liberal to say HR 3 is solely social legislation without a substantial fiscal component…

I’d give you props for not scampering away like you usually do, except that the profundity of the intellectual dishonesty you show here is too gross.

No, I used the phrase I was looking for, but the next time I’m looking for a right-wing Republican to put words in my mouth, I’ll know who to call first. We know what Breitbart has — a full frontal shot. And yes, if someone had a naked picture of me that he paid someone for, and that person were threatening to put it on the internet, I would consider that person to be ethical garbage. Breitbart is already well known as ethical garbage, so this is totally in line with his schtick.

  25. dduck says:

CO,I will bet he does not, Dems are not wimps like Reps who fold when they get caught with their hands in a cookie jar.
