LET’S MOVE CAMPAIGN STAMP COLLECTION: The United States Postal Service, USPS, which $4 billion in the red this year, is set to destroy a series of stamps as part of First Lady Michelle Obama’s ‘Let’s Move’ campaign because some of the stamps depict kids doing some ‘unsafe’ things. Three of the 15 stamps, show kids engaging in behavior the White House allegedly deems unacceptable — skateboarding without knee pads, doing a “cannonball” into a pool and performing a handstand without a helmet.
This begs the question, have the stamps been printed yet and if so, won’t it amount to an enormous waste of money if they have already been printed? Um, I thought the USPS was scrounging for loose change?
PostalNews.com reports that the “entire press run” will be destroyed, though a few other sites said the stamps haven’t yet been printed. It would be interesting to see what costs were incurred to produce the stamps.
While safety first matters, as a kid, I rode bicycles without helmets, rollerskated without knee pads, among other activities, and survived. So, I seriously doubt looking at a stamp of a kid skateboarding without knee pads wouldn’t rock my world. In fact, if the truth be told, today most kids spend their time playing video games such as Grand Theft Auto 5 or texting.
It’s a sad commentary that we could get so wrapped up in being politically correct, but are virtually quiet when honor student, Erin Cox, trying to do the right thing by driving a drunk friend home is being punished by North Andover High School. That’s the kind of injustice we need to focus on and not a stamp of a kid performing a handstand without a helmet.
