President Obama announced that he has accepted Eric Shinseki’s resignation over the ongoing VA scandal. Sloan Gibson will become acting secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs to replace Shinseki.
Obama said he accepted Shinseki’s resignation with “considerable regret,” after the two men met in the Oval Office Friday morning.
Shinseki had faced mounting calls for his resignation from both Republican and Democratic lawmakers. His resignation comes two days after a blistering internal report found deep-seated problems in the veterans’ health care system, which provides care to about 6.5 million veterans annually.
Shinseki, who is a retired four-star Army general, has overseen the VA since the start of Obama’s presidency.
