Several of our authors have taken the time and the effort to illustrate how shortsighted, ludicrous and just plain hard-hearted the rhetoric of several of our illustrious GOP presidential candidates has become when they address issues such as abortion, birthright citizenship and en masse deportation of undocumented immigrants.
Our Managing Editor, Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estés, addressing the “plans” of “those who have such sick ideas,” struck a chord with this immigrant-veteran when she — in some very powerful and passionate comments on this issue — wrote:
We love our country, the USA. And have spilled our blood for it. The legions of war dead with Latino names, is rampant. The Native American and Latino names of the Americas, along with the names of African Americans and young men of Euro descent, persons of Asian heritage… on the VietNam wall…
¡Qué verdad! How True!
But leave it to my favorite satirist, Andy Borowitz, to — in one piercingly brilliant piece of satire — address all three issues and expose the hypocrisy and duplicity of these presidential wannabes and of those who applaud them on these issues.
I hope Mr. Borowitz and the New Yorker will forgive me for quoting Borowitz’ entire piece of unbelievable “satire imitating life.”
Eager to shore up their pro-life credentials, several Republican Presidential candidates used campaign appearances on Wednesday to assert that the babies of undocumented workers have the right to be born and then immediately deported.
.
Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee sounded that theme in a campaign appearance in Des Moines, telling his audience, “We must vigilantly safeguard the life of the unborn, and, as soon it is no longer unborn, make sure that it leaves and takes its illegal parents with it.”
.
Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker concurred, telling a crowd in Iowa City, “Every life is precious, and we must protect that life before marching it to the border twenty-four hours later, at the very most.”
.
Perhaps the most evangelical invocation of the right to life came from Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas), campaigning in Cedar Rapids. “Every baby is a creation of God Almighty, and as Jesus is my savior, every baby has the right to live,” he said. “Just not here.”
.
The initial response to the candidates’ statements was somewhat mixed, with some G.O.P. voters complaining that Walker’s twenty-four-hour window for deporting babies was overly lenient.
Thank you Mr. Borowitz, thank you, Dr. E!
