The reports of President Obama’s ‘gaffe’ during a speech to the Congressional Black Caucus has sparked another round of silliness from some of the net pundits.
For those who may have missed it, Obama was trying to say that he wanted millionaires to pay more taxes than janitors but he made a minor slip that seemed to come out ‘jews’ instead of janitors.
This has led to all kinds of fury on the net about how it shows some form of anti-semitism on the part of the President, which I consider beyond stupid.
In the first place I’m not sure you can say he was actually saying the word Jew. The letters Ju make the same sound and it’s hardly a leap to say he made a verbal slip from Ja to Ju.
In the second place, even if he was saying the word Jew, given the recent focus on Palestine at the UN it is hardly odd the Jewish people would be on his mind, again a fairly innocent slip.
In short, absent a history (of which there is none) of anti-semtism on his part I think it’s silly to read anything into this other than a simple slip of the tongue.
The only area in which I think there is some validity is the point that had the same slip been made by President Bush or any of the current GOP contenders that the reaction would have been harsher though I would hope most on the left would adopt a more rational view.
But to claim Obama is prejudiced is just ridiculous and I hope my friends on the right step up to acknowledge that, just as I hope my friends on the left would do so if the parties were reversed.
