This short speech is a great history lesson on religious tolerance, and it will be remembered, even though the mainstream media seem incapable of putting this story into any context other than “he said/she said.” They don’t even challenge geographically incorrect statements.
Whatever you may think of the proposed mosque and community center, lost in the heat of the debate has been a basic question: Should government attempt to deny private citizens the right to build a house of worship on private property based on their particular religion? That may happen in other countries, but we should never allow it to happen here. This nation was founded on the principle that the government must never choose between religions, or favor one over another.
Not for the first time, I am a little in awe of the power of the web in transforming access to information. It would not have been that long ago that a transcript might have been available, but posting/watching a video would have simply been too hard and expensive. And 10 years before that? If you lived in NYC the local TV stations might have played one soundbite.
