GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — A former adviser to John Edwards recounted Wednesday how the former presidential candidate’s now-deceased wife indignantly confronted her husband, baring her chest in front of staff members the day after a tabloid reported that he was cheating on her.
………………
“‘You don’t see me anymore,'” Reynolds quoted Elizabeth Edwards as screaming. “He didn’t have much of a reaction.”
I wasn’t fond of Elizabeth Edwards. She had quite an online presence where she defended her husband and advocated very liberal positions. It was also upsetting to many to know she knew of Edward’s affair even as he continued on to run for President. But all that aside, the above testimony made my heart break for what Elizabeth Edwards went through. The “You don’t see me anymore” is the most heart wrenching. What she obviously meant is that Edwards didn’t see her as sexual anymore. I’ve had close family members go through breast cancer. It is a difficult and terrifying road. What a woman needs most during this time is love, affection, and an assurance from her husband that she is still desirable. This is where love is really tested. “For better or for worse..in sickness and in health.” These are our vows. How easily they are forgotten these days. John Edward’s story is about so much more than a former Democratic Vice Presidential and former Presidential candidate cheating on his wife. After all, we have had a President do that, this is about betrayal of the highest order. This is turning your back on your spouse even as she faces death, fathering a child with his mistress, and then having his wife hide all that for him. Elizabeth felt invisible. Here she is facing death itself, leaving her young children, and the man who had pledged to love her through everything didn’t even see her as woman anymore. There is such sadness there.
John Edwards is clearly a selfish, self absorbed narcissistic man who claimed to care for the poor, while living large himself. To imagine that he could have been our Vice President, or even our President is disturbing, to say the least.
