In a move that may have saved his government, Canadian PM Stephen Harper today asked Governor General Michaëlle Jean to suspend Parliament until the end of January. Some had speculated that Jean would deny the request but she has approved it and they will be out of business until the end of January.
Some observers thought that perhaps this was just a move to delay the inevitable but it now appears that the move may actually succeed. Some members of the Liberal Party have said that they do not think the coalition can last until they reconvene, and that would in theory prevent the move to toss out Harper.
I am not enough of an expert in Canadian politics to judge if this is true or not, but if the coalition cannot survive 6 weeks how did they plan to govern for 2 years ?
