I’m going to get in trouble for saying this in a blog post. But, I make a habit of getting folks upset at me for saying un-PC things on this blog, so why change now…
Ben Carson’s statement on the contrast of upbringing between President Obama and most black folks in this country is ABSOLUTELY CORRECT! My family, and other black folks, have long known that the street cred in the partnership between the President and the First Lady clearly goes to Michelle. In other words, Barack would not scare anyone on the streets while you would give Michelle much respect.
One of the reasons why the President may not be the First Black President is because he was never meant to be. It is possible Obama is the Democratic version of an Uncle Tom.
In previous decades, the Democratic Party establishment has given lip service to civil rights leaders such as Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton but never gave them real political power. Unlike Obama, both of these men were raised in the United States where they had to deal with real racism. Obama, as a man of color raised in a post-institutional racist America, was non-threatening and acceptable.
If a Republican had been in office for the past seven years as race relations have gotten worse, there certainly would have been widespread outrage at the lack of political will in providing hope for a solution. With Obama in office, Democrats will say “it’s not our fault. We gave you what you wanted.”
The Urban Dictionary defines Uncle Tom as “a black man who will do anything to stay in good standing with the white man including betray his own people.”
History will determine the legacy of Barack Obama’s presidency, but from where I sit, on race relations – he gets an F.
