“Freelance editorial cartoonist Ted Rall no longer contributes to the Los Angeles Times.” – from the biography pages of the Los Angeles Times employees. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
A blog post published by the Los Angeles Times has cost editorial cartoonist Tell Rall his job with that newspaper.
In his post, Rall accuses Los Angeles police officers of wrongdoing.
In a note to the newspaper’s readers, editorial pages editor Nicholas Goldberg writes this:
. . . the recording and other evidence provided by the LAPD raise serious questions about the accuracy of Rall’s blog post. Based on this, the piece should not have been published.
Rall’s future work will not appear in The Times.
The Los Angeles Times is a trusted source of news because of the quality and integrity of the work its journalists do. This is a reminder of the need to remain vigilant about what we publish.
In an e-mail to LAObserved.com publisher Kevin Roderick, Goldberg writes the following:
Our note to readers had nothing to do with Ted Rall’s politics or his attitudes toward police. We run articles about the LAPD all the time in the Los Angeles Times and many of them are critical. The issue here was Ted’s description of his 2001 stop for jaywalking. After looking at the documents and records given to us by the police, we had serious questions about whether he had described it accurately.
Ted Rall is no stranger to controversy. In 2004 he created a cartoon in which he describes Condoleezza Rice as a . . . Well, see for yourself.
