Breitbart.com claims that the West Coast longshoreman union is leaving the AFL-CIO, which is true, but claim that Obamacare and immigration reform are important reasons which exaggerates wildly. Of course such conservative sites as Michelle Malkin cite Breitbart’s article in a delirium of joy that the evil ObamaCare is being rejected by the conservative boogeyman, Big Labor.
What’s really happening? The Oregonian’s web site, OregonLive not only tells the whole truth, but provides evidence for it in the form of the letter sent to Richard Trumka, president of the AFL-CIO, by Robert MacEllrath, who is head of the longshoremen’s union. it’s a 3 page letter. The cites of ObamaCare and immigration take up the next to the last paragraph in the letter. Most of the paragraph is actually complaining about the currently proposed immigration reform not being “liberal” enough. ObamaCare is complained about in two short sentences with the only complaint about it being the tax on “Cadillac plans”. The real primary reason for the withdrawal of the longshoremen from the AFL-CIO is its failure to prevent what the ILWU considered attacks on itself by other AFL-CIO units, including another affiliate actually crossing picket lines and the AFL-CIO instructing the Oregon State Federation to rescind its support for the ILWU labor action.
But of course the truth wouldn’t have supported their partisan message, would it?
