Up or Out

From the grapevine: US ambassador to Iraq Zalmay Khalilzad will be nominated to our UN ambassadorship post. This would make him the highest ranking Muslim in American government history. Khalilzad is a very talented diplomat–but he’ll be tainted by his association with this administration’s failed policies in Iraq. Good luck to him–he’ll need it.

My extended thoughts here.

Thought-provoking post, David. I have long admired Ambassador Khalilzad for his heroic efforts in Iraq. He seemed to be one of the few voices of calm and reason coming out of that chaotic environment. I can’t imagine that replacing him there will help that conflict at all, but it would be understandable if he was frustrated with the job. Having said that, I read under the comments in your article, that Khalilzad was a member of the PNAC, and wrote the 1998 letter to then President Clinton, urging regime change in Iraq. In my view, the neocons have been fully discredited, and I have no wish to have one- even a luminary like Khalilzad, representing us at the UN. I think it sends a terrible signal- that America is still intent on playing an aggressive role in the world.
