The Great Artists: Ray Charles – Georgia On My Mind (From “Live At Montreux 1997”) (VIDEO)

An email from a younger TMV reader talking about music involved the name of Ray Charles. So here are two videos that may be of interest.

1) From 1997, towards the end of his life, Ray Charles singing Georgia On My Mind (From “Live At Montreux 1997”):

2) Then go back to Feb 1973 and enjoy this very funny video of Charles guest starring on NBC’s “Flip Wilson Show.” Wilson was an African-American comedian who had a highly popular weekly show on NBC and since his death sadly doesn’t get the ink and mention on the Internet that he deserves. Here’s a segment where Wilson appears in his character Geraldine (Wilson in drag) with Charles:

And here’s the final segments with Charles.

But there is one song that Charles sang that always brings tears to my eyes — the way HE sang it:

Two great performers. Netflix has some dvd offerings of Flip Wilson’s hilarious shows. I suppose they would be dated if we watched them now, but some would surely equal Laurel and Hardy in timelessness.

Thanks for including Ray’s version of “America” Joe.

IMO his version is the very best you’ll ever hear.

I had the pleasure of seeing Ray Charles perform at an outdoor festival many years ago. My neice was with us at the time and she was having trouble seeing over the tops of heads, so (since it was general admission) we wound our way throught he crowd until we were about about 20 feet away. That was a memorable experience seeing him so close up and hearing all the things he was saying the mic wasn’t picking up 😉 . He was clearly having so much fun and enjoying himself you knew he would be doing this whether he was famous or not. The joy was just infectious.
