NSA Leaks: Rep. Peter King Says Journalists Who Report on Leaks Should Be Punished

Rep. Peter King (R-NY) told Anderson Cooper during an appearance on CNN that journalists who report on classified information, like Glenn Greenwald recently did on behalf of NSA leaker Edward Snowden, should be punished, along with their sources.

Talking Points Memo: “Actually, if they willingly knew that this was classified information, I think action should be taken, especially on something of this magnitude,” King said. “I know that the whole issue of leaks has been gone into over the last month. I think something on this magnitude, there is an obligation, both moral but also legal, I believe, against a reporter disclosing something which would so severely compromise national security. As a practical matter, I guess it happened in the past several years, a number of reporters who have been prosecuted under it, so the answer is yes to your question.”

Here’s Glenn Greenwald’s tweet about Peter King’s comments:

So according to King, no matter what the govt does, if they decide to call it “classified”, no one should go near it with a glove box. Those that do should be prosecuted.
Lets just take away a few freedoms shall we? We can start with the first, and the fourth and proceed from there.
    What a putz.

Peter King is such a card*. He’s still trying to sell the idea that all American Muslims are terrorists and need to be watched / investigated 24/7… For their own good of course.

*card – as in cardboard caricature of an ignorant racist. Good ol’ Archie Bunker in a suit.

Peter King is the kind of man that gets into power that we need protection from. Men like him are exactly why the founding fathers included the Bill of Rights. Without our amendments, men like him would turn this nation into just another dictatorship. In the name of protecting this nation, he would destroy what makes it America.

Wow, you guys certainly have King’s number. Next, please give us the skinny on Feinstein and Rogers.

  • slamfu

    They can suck it too.

  • The guy is better suited for right-wing talk radio than any position of leadership.
