Nelson Mandela Memorial: Right Wing Freak-Out Over Obama and Raul Castro’s Handshake

Mandela Memorial: Right Wing Freak Out Over Obama, Raul Castro Hand Shake

#MandelaMemorial:  The right wing is freaking out over President Obama shaking the hand of Cuban leader Raul Castro at Nelson Mandela’s memorial at the FNB Stadium in Soweto, Tuesday morning. Um, exactly what was President Obama supposed to do? Be rude? Isn’t the essence of Nelson Mandela the very reason both men attended the ceremony? Obama stopped to shake Castro’s hand as he was walking to the podium to pay tribute to Mandela, ABC News reports.

Can’t wait to hear the usual chorus of haters on Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Drudge Report and Breitbart go nuts over this handshake. They are also claiming President Obama bowed to Raul Castro. Another lie. If you look at the angle of the picture. He was leaning down.

Breitbart: For those who believe in human rights and liberty, the sight of our president bounding up some stairs to energetically shake hands with Raul Castro, dictator of Cuba, was more than a little unsettling — regardless of the circumstance. But that’s what President Obama seemed to go out of his way to do at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service Tuesday.

Sen. Marco Rubio also weighed in, blasting President Obama for not taking Raul Castro to task for human rights violations in Cuba, during the handshake — at Nelson Mandela’s memorial. SMH.

This was cross-posted from The Hinterland Gazette.

UPDATE: The controversy over the handshake rages among conservatives issuing over the top sound bites and conservative bloggers. GO HERE FORE DETAILS.

God forbid the art of diplomacy should be practiced by the leader of the free world!

  • Marsman

Can the people who thought that the earth had stopped rotating when Obama put mustard on his hamburger or his wife recommended a healthier diet really believe that anyone will care what they think?

  • ShannonLeee

who are these people? has Fox News even reacted?

  • rudi

Just check out the racist comments at BreitBart and the other haters.

  • sheknows

We all expect the reaction from the right to be hateful and childish. This is not news.
If they would have momentarily honored silence and just let this funeral be a tribute to the peace we all strive toward in this world, That would have been news.

    Adam W. Casler @adamcasler

Bizarre that the media is reporting on the handshake b/w Pres. Obama and Raul Castro as much (if not more) than the funeral of N. Mandela.

    I agree with this.

  • brcarthey

Yeah, it’s not like this Wal-Mart a**-kissing crowd doesn’t do a full-on lip-lock with Chinese leaders. No not at all.

  • JSpencer

Good point brc. It’s the H word again.

And when President Obama shook hands with Castro did he use the other hand to straighten his hammer and sickle lapel pin before he raised that arm in the air with a clenched fist?

  • Good link, rudi.

    Resist … reading … Breitbart

That selective memory thing must be a great trick for those who are so often on the wrong side of history.

  • epiphyte

@jspencer … wrong side of the way history unfolded? or wrong side of the way it would have unfolded in a saner world?

I don’t think Dr. E’s memory is selective… quite the contrary. She’s recalling real things which don’t jibe with the historical narrative du-jour. You see that as a great trick? For my own part, I see it as the debunking of a trick. But not a very good one.

  • JSpencer

Epiphyte, it seems you misunderstood my comment. Rarely do Dr. E’s words fail to ring true to my ears – and they didn’t this time either. I was bouncing off her quote, not taking issue with it.

    censorship?

Diplomacy 101, shake hands and stab him in the back later.
Like Putin and the Chinese do and even the Iranians. Besides, if you have a cold it is a cool way to spread germs. I like the fist bump and use it on doctors too.
