This reminds of an old tv shock talk show host… I believe his rating were tanking, so he made up a story about Nazis attacking him in a bathroom and carving a swastika in his head. The comment itself is laughable, but it is good to see the desperation. Maybe Rush is in the last throws of his talk show career.

You can tell the 20% of the population that believe Obama is a Kenyan-born muslim communist absolutely anything and they will believe it. You simply can’t cure stupid. But you can exacerbate it.

  • lol at _Moderate_

Maybe to take your mind off Limbaugh, you could go and create a funny caption for the picture of the murdered U.S. ambassador one of your columnists put up (be sure to work in some anti-Mormon bigotry in your comments, like the others do).

Or you could go and read the article by another one of your columnists calling Republican/conservative blogs “Traitors” for discussing a newspaper article.

I can’t understand it. You’ve got columnists on your own site asking people to write jokes about assassinated American diplomats to attack Mitt Romney and labeling fellow Americans as traitors, but your highest priority as the editor-in-chief is to make sure that the latest Media Matters attack on Limbaugh gets more exposure?

If I were you I’d clean up some of the disgusting, lunatic rhetoric being hosted on your own site before throwing stones elsewhere.

  • ShannonLeee

There is nothing moderate about many of the articles and opinions posted on this site. What IS moderate is the debate that takes place between the people on this site and that is what I think makes TMV special. The posts are radical, but the editors keep a close watch over the discussions.

  • CStanley

Shanonlee, to the extent that that’s true, it’s only because people are desperate for a site where it’s possible to have real discussions and because this site has previously steered away from the most extreme crap like the posts that lol is referencing.

  • Willwright

Well if you listen to him or any of his wannabes for about 15 minutes you have their entire spiel and can accurately predict what they will say on just about any subject without tuning in. The only time I ever listen to talk radio is when I’m in the car with absolutely nothing better to do, usually in super market parking lot waiting for the wife. You need to remember people listen to him and others not to be informed but more to get confirmation of views they already hold.

  • DaGoat

Beats me, but I don’t understand why anybody looks at Mediamatters either.

  • SteveK

Beats me, but I don’t understand why anybody looks at Mediamatters either.

Beats me, probably so they can be kept up with the most egregious insanity coming out of Ultra-Right talk shows without having to listen to the rest of their offensive twaddle.

  • zephyr

What Steve said. Somebody has to monitor this (insert favorite explective here), not because it’s deserving in it’s own right but because so many people in this country are now incapable of grasping the difference between utter, raving nonsense (Limbaugh) and reasoned discourse. Frankly I won’t even watch the clip, I’ve already heard and seen enough of Limbaugh’s foaming at the mouth, hate spewing garbage to last a lifetime. I’m sure whatever is contained in the clip would jar, clang, and raise the blood pressure of my (thus far) quiet and pleasant morning. I’ll pass.

  • slamfu

“how can anyone with a brain listen to this guy???”

I think that is one of those questions that answers itself.

  • As the audience for AM rant-radio continues to decline, he must be more and more outrageous to get attention.

It’s remarkable for those of us old enough to remember what he sounded like circa 1990 or so, where he was primarily a comedian and, while annoying and obnoxious could also be clever and funny. Some of the reaction against him, 20+ years ago, was shrill and over the top. But now he’s become every bit as bad as his detractors say, and then some. It’s apparently his only way to maintain his income.

  • CStanley

Well he started out parodying the left but now it’s self parody.

  • Jim Satterfield

I think of it as having an ideological lobotomy. Someone who buys wholeheartedly into one ideology or belief system to the point to where it becomes integral to their self identity just abandons the ability to think rationally about any subject the community who shares their beliefs comes to a group think decision about.

Look at global warming. 97% of climatologists agree that humans are influencing climate significantly. Conservatives overwhelmingly decide that rather than a scientific conclusion it’s a political one on the part of all of those scientists because of the policy and economic implications. They come up with objections, like “It’s the sun.”, and when astronomers as well as climatologists say that explanation doesn’t work they just ignore them and keep repeating the lie. Sound familiar?

  • Willwright

I agree with Dean that he has become increasing strident partly because there is a lot more competition from wannabes. Another reason is what’s acceptable today or what’s in some circles has become considered mainstream thinking. I can’t imagine 20 years ago that we would have people broadcasting nationwide denigrating a sitting president and calling him socialist, fascist, or the like. I think people then would have been outraged and said enough is enough. His program would be gone, having become permanently radioactive to sponsors.

  • Jim S., you are wrong. The correct phrase is self-inflicted ideological lobotomy. 😉

  • Jim Satterfield

Barky, ideological lobotomies are always voluntary.

  • ProWife

Does anyone remember when the moderate right used to tell the left to leave the United States if they didn’t like it. Perhaps listening the Merle Haggard song “You’re Walkin’ on the Fightin’ Side of Me” will help ring a bell. It seems as though Rush Limpbaughls and many others on the radical right wing do not like this country. Maybe they should head Merle’s words; “If you don’t like it leave it…..” The haters are free to go elsewhere. I would help pay for Rush’s ticket out.

  • ProWife

Heed not head, sorry. There I go apologizing again.
