Fact-checkers Debunk GOP Obamacare Claim

The fact-check websites say “not so fast” to GOP claims that the Affordable Care Act kills jobs according to a CBO report.

Politifact.com gave House Speaker John Boehner and Fox News’ Gretchen Carlson a “mostly false” rating for similar statements that the CBO report says the ACA will “kill 2.3 million jobs.”

They made it sound as if jobs are going away because businesses don’t create them or because they eliminated existing jobs. The CBO report, though, was referring to workers who decide on their own to leave the workforce, because they don’t have to keep working a job just to keep their health benefits.

The Washington Post fact-checker Glenn Kessler gave such claims “three Pinocchios.”

Factcheck.org reaches a similar conclusion.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor falsely claims that a new report confirms the long-held Republican belief that “millions of hardworking Americans will lose their jobs,” because of the Affordable Care Act. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office report says more than 2 million people will decide not to work, or will decide to work less, due to the law – not that they will “lose their jobs.”

The GOP never lets the truth get in the way of a good lie.

  • Paul Ryan is now correcting his colleagues on the facts of their bogus claim.

It’s bad enough the GOP is willing to spin this for political reasons, but it’s also deeply irresponsible. Has this party completely lost its’s grasp of why honesty matters?

    Thanks for the link Ballard.
“To be clear, Ryan wasn’t thrilled with the CBO’s finding. He said he was “troubled” by the report because it suggested that Obamacare was encouraging Americans “not to get on the ladder of life, to begin working, getting the dignity of work, getting more opportunities, rising the income, joining the middle class.”

So I guess like all the other social programs, ACA just encourages laziness. Seems to be a favorite theme of his.

The GOP never lets the truth get in the way of a good lie.

I think its more of the case that the GOP never let the facts get in the way of a good sound bit. Subtle difference, but its there. This is a pretty gross misrepresentation of the facts of the CBO report however. But I am sure that a bizarrely large percentage of GOP voters will just eat it up and say “I told you so”, roughly the same percentage that still thinks Obama said “You didn’t build that”. Gullible twits being led by craven spin meisters.
