The GOP convention’s surprise act turns out to be Clint Eastwood, partnering with an empty chair to do an X-rated version of a Mel Brooks routine, Dirty Harry as a potty-mouthed comic.

Who knew? The formerly dignified icon engages an imaginary Barack Obama with such banter as “What do you want me to tell Mr. Romney? I can’t tell him that. He can’t do that to himself. You’re getting as bad as Biden.”

The 82-year-old Eastwood’s cringe-worthy endorsement does serve one useful purpose…

Not that it’s important, but Mr. Eastwood looks better at 82 than 98% of the 82 year old population.

The fact that his X-rated performance, though funny to us depraved Democrats, and titillating to some of the Republican delegates, seemed to embarrass the Romneys and the Ryans was only to be expected when you bring a Hollywood entertainer to a family values (at least as sex is concerned) convention. Hopefully the children attending weren’t aware of what the adults were laughing about.

Any children hanging out in that hall, like most children in America, probably know more about what we oldsters think of as “x-rated” than we like to think. Maybe ratings systems are really an attempt on the part of adults to protect ourselves from feeling old and beleaguered when we’re forced to face inevitable changes in values, standards, and humor.

But the cat Eastwood let out of the bag last night was that the Republican convention is all about show and nothing about tell. By this morning, most of America was surely aware of having seen a TV program about winning and losing but has a very limited idea of what’s about to be won or lost.

We’re confused, and that’s what we’re supposed to be!
