Dateline: Aurora Colorado just outside Denver: 12 murdered in midnight showing of Batman, The Dark Knight Rises, 50 additional people shot… injuries include children as young as 6 years old, and 3 months old (Afternoon UPDATES including VIDEOS)

NBC News photo of arrested accused shooter James Holmes

[EDITOR’s NOTE: See the bottom of this post for the latest updates.

UPDATE: Among those shot are one Navy officer and two Reservists.

UPDATE: People rose early to the news here, and have lined up at the Bonfils blood bank to donate blood. The call has been made for O negative and A negative and for platletts. They’ve used for the 50 victims nearly 300 pints of blood, which is about 1/3 of the blood bank’s weekly allotment to h and h, health and hospitals.

UPDATE: The apprehended alleged shooter James Holmes, 24 years old, appears to be from San Diego, and was driving a car with Tennessee plates, had no military service, was alleged to have been carrying an assault rifle and two handguns. The first murder victim has been announced, a young woman sportscaster who was a beautiful redhead and a loved daughter. Her mother verified her death just an hour ago. Inside the theatre are still the bodies of ten of the dead. Similar was true of Columbine massacre, the bodies of the children and the teacher lay in the school overnight. It may be worth noting later that there too, it was at first thought all the bodies of the dead had been boobytrapped by the killers.

UPDATE: The 3 month old child has pulled through. Six different hospitals in Denver and Aurora are packed with victims of ‘chemical exposure’ and devastating gunshot wounds, one a six year old child. The ages of persons injured are from 3 months to 31 years old it is reported.

UPDATE: Reports now are reporting not knowing whether it is 12 or 14 who have been murdered. It appears the number of deaths is 12.

A clearly insane person with a gun (again) it is said stood up at the front of the theatre at a midnight showing of the new film “The Dark Knight Rises” and began firing into the peaceful crowd of theatre-goers.

Panic ensued, 911 was flooded with pleas for help, people in the theatre next door at first thought all the sudden screaming was in the film itself, but then realized that everyone’s life was in danger.

Right now, all news media are asking/begging for all who were in theatre and who are alive to please call home and let their people know they are still alive. People are screaming and crying from seeing children shot.

Parents are rushing to Gateway highschool in Aurora Colorado which is the rendezvous point of first response officers helping to process matching up people with their families.

I have to say, this is what happened after the Columbine massacre, the rendezvous at a public school, and the scene there was just horrendous as parents found out their children were either alive, or dead. Ripped our hearts heart out, beyond heartbreak.

One suspect has been apprehended, a young man (unconfirmed 24 years old) who apparently threw a gas canister before opening fire into the crowd of about 300 souls. People tried to flee, many on hands and knees, others pouring blood from mouth and wounds, and others tried to drag the wounded with them.

The suspect was found hiding in the parking lot with a rifle and hand gun, gas mask, bragging he had more explosives and gas in his home.

There is talk right now that there may be a second suspect.

Some people, meaning young people and children were dressed up with Batman t-shirts and the little Batman ears on their heads, as people have done for Pirates of the Carribean with Johnny Depp, and of course for any of the midnight cult films. Innocent. Innocent. Innocent.

But the tell about how certain adult psyches are arranged is that when something like this happens, most recently to Gabriel Giffords, and we are still not and will never be recovered from the many women shot to death in Canada, nor Cho’s murder victims at Virginia Tech, nor Columbine, nor nor nor… the tell is when there is a massacre, instead of profound compassion and outpouring of grief by the’ over the top’ gun rights crowd, braying and mocking commences about “prying my cold dead hands off my rifle’.

¡Basta! As a member of NRA off and on for decades, and supporting rifle badges for Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, I despair that honest gun owners will realize and act decisively as a bloc instead of being led by those of the old cadre –the largest org of gun owners could be the heroes of the universe– if they made legislatively sure firearms never came into insane people’s possession. It is not true that this cannot be done. It can. It’s not that it’s where there’s a will there’s a way. It’s: Where there is will and conscience, there’s a way to safeguard innocent lives from being ambushed and suddenly predated upon by ‘a man with a gun’ who has no regard for human life whatsoever.

The subject is huge, as is the shock of the ‘once again.’

There really are not words enough. Only that for ‘the slaughter of the innocents’ recorded in the Holy Bible, King Herod-ordered a stealthy and egregious night execution of all young male children in their cradles in the village of Bethlehem, so as to avoid the loss of his throne to a rumored newborn who would become King of the Jews… Perhaps these ancient words are barely words enough:
A voice was heard in Ramah,
weeping and in huge mourning,
Rachel weeping for her children…
and she would not be comforted
for her children are no more.

If you’ve ever been at a disaster or massacre site or ER after a shooting, you know the mothers and fathers, those who love– often scream their grief until they lose their voices and are only screaming air.

May the families who have lost their children, be comforted in every way possible. May the surgeons helping the victims be guided by invisible and holy hands, may all the injured recover, and their families hold steady throughout… including the three month old child currently in ICU along with nine others in massively critical condition, and the others in serious conditions.

All hospitals in the city are taking calls from families searching for their loved ones.
Just released: blurry cell phone films of people fleeing the theatre.
President Obama has been notified and made a statement with his wife, Michelle, about this massacre.

MSNBC reports that the Presidential campaign has been put partially on hold:

*** Politics takes a back seat: The tragic shooting in Colorado means that politics and the Obama-vs.-Romney presidential race will take a back seat today — and probably throughout the weekend. President Obama, who was notified of the shooting at 5:26 am, has released this statement: “Michelle and I are shocked and saddened by the horrific and tragic shooting in Colorado. Federal and local law enforcement are still responding, and my administration will do everything that we can to support the people of Aurora in this extraordinarily difficult time… As we do when confronted by moments of darkness and challenge, we must now come together as one American family.” Mitt Romney also released a statement: “We are praying for the families and loved ones of the victims during this time of deep shock and immense grief. We expect that the person responsible for this terrible crime will be quickly brought to justice.” For now, the Romney campaign says the candidate’s schedule will go on. As for the president, his first public event is scheduled for later this morning where he’s likely to speak about the tragedy for the first time on camera.

It is heartbreaking and terrifying all at the same time.

  • This just kills me. My own daughter was at a local premiere last night; such an innocent, lighthearted event.

I grieve with the parents of those lost. Oh so sad.

“The Joker: I just did what I do best. I took your little plan and I turned it on itself. Look what I did to this city with a few drums of gas and a couple of bullets. Hmmm? You know… You know what I’ve noticed? Nobody panics when things go “according to plan.” Even if the plan is horrifying! If, tomorrow, I tell the press that, like, a gang banger will get shot, or a truckload of soldiers will be blown up, nobody panics, because it’s all “part of the plan”. But when I say that one little old mayor will die, well then everyone loses their minds!”

[Joker hands Two-Face a gun and points it at himself]

“The Joker: Introduce a little anarchy. Upset the established order, and everything becomes chaos. I’m an agent of chaos. Oh, and you know the thing about chaos? It’s fair!”

The Joker speaking in The Dark Knight/ Batman movie

Truly the first thing I thought of when I heard this had happened.

  • My God.

We have a facility in Aurora. You know this, Dr. E. Praying for all who work there, all their loved ones and family…for all the good people of the area who will be life altered for years because of this.

Bless you too, E. This is your backyard as well.

@Ethos, I put the entire quote from the screenplay on your comment so readers can see the pacing of it. Thanks. One apt response to such an inexplicable slaughter.

@Elijah, the alleged shooter man is young, 24 years old, his name they say is James Holmes, and he was armed to the teeth, and clearly, HAS TO BE, insane. Phone calls have been coming in to myself and our family members and my task force from all over the country wanting to know if we are ok and what can they do to help. Human beings Z are such extraordinary souls even as abject evil walks the world. I put up our Post Trauma Recovery Protocol on TMV just a few minutes ago, as I saw a newcaster miss entirely that the young soul she was interviewing was trembling uncontrollably and was in shock. She didnt even notice. ALL newscasters on site should be trained to recognize persons in shock need medical attention. On another note, just as when I was at Columbine the foolish reporters both local and national are reporting ‘everyone is asking Why?’ They are way off course. In fact when they ran that by several survivors tonight… ‘have you wondered why?” they said ‘no, I have other things to worry about,’ and one man said, ‘I went there for a minute, but its not good to dwell on things that have no answer.’ At Columbine the press decided that everyone was saying ‘how could this happen here?” The press was making it up out of whole cloth. The survivors were in deep grief for their friends who had been killed and werent asking classist questions.

Most of all Elijah, please keep us all in your prayers. We had a fine police woman (a mother of little ones) shot to death a few weeks ago cuaght in gang crossfire. We have had 5 major forest fires in the last 5 weeks in which 35,000 are without homes, 400 homes burnt down, wildlife killed, horses burnt. hundreds of thousands of acres of prime pine forest now black and burnt to the ground. And now this. Even though, as you know from being where you’re from, we have grit, still it’s a lot to carry. Thank you.

Dear Teena, thank you for your thoughts. They matter.

“if they made legislatively sure firearms never came into insane people’s possession. It is not true that this cannot be done. It can. It’s not that it’s where there’s a will there’s a way. It’s: Where there is will and conscience, there’s a way to safeguard innocent lives from being ambushed and suddenly predated upon by ‘a man with a gun’ who has no regard for human life whatsoever.”

There is only one way to insure insane people do not have access or possess firearms.

That is to make all firearms illegal and to have mandatory 20+ sentences to anyone found possessing a firearm. No exceptions. And fund the building of new prisons to house the offenders.

Not everyone is born insane. Some develop metal problems over a period of years. One day they can be the hunter that uses firearms for hunting and target shooting legallyand then something happens where they become mentally unstable enough to commit a crime such as this.

We can find examples of people that have mental problems and society and family does not react or support theses individuals so they get the proper help. Today there is one soldier that commits suicide daily and the military and society is not qualified to help or diagnose the problem until it is too late. The same holds true for those with mental problems that casue someone to commit murder.

So taking the guns out of the hands of the insane is impossible as too many are insane and go undiagnosed.

Taking the guns out of everyones hands is the only answer. Otherwise, how do you determine one person is sane and can own a gun and another person is mentally unstable and can not be permitted to own a gun. If they caould make this diagnosis, then maybe society could prevent over 300+ soldiers dieing by their own hand.

Thank you for your levelheaded, informed and calm “reporting,” DR. E.

I add my horror and grief and prayers for all the families affected to those of others here and I hope that the media and the public will wait at least 24 hours before politicizing or otherwise using this tragedy to advance whatever personal or group causes or agendas.

  • CStanley

There really are no words, it’s just horrific. I offer my prayers for the victims and families. Can’t bear to read any more about it as I know the politicization will come despite the calls to avoid it.

  • RP

    It has already begun.

  • DR. CLARISSA PINKOLA ESTÉS, Managing Editor of TMV, and Columnist

Thank you Dorian, and CS and RP. Your thoughts and prayers are being put to good use here. Promise.

  • hyperflow

Reports say the gunner didn’t have many friends and was alone most of the time. Separation from a community can be really heavy on the heart. I find this to be a more important detail than combing through his music and movies collection, or batman, or any other media influence. Really tragic.

Not sure if anything can be done to ‘prevent’ this from happening again. Perhaps that is what scares people the most. Tragic. Poor families. What a waste for no gain.

  • StockBoyLA

This is horrible. My thoughts and prayers to everyone to all the families and friends of those killed and injured.

  • jdledell

How do beings created in G-d’s image do something like this? Does G-d weep when this happens? You look around the World and violence is endemic, as it has been for thousands of years. Instead of learning to be better beings, violence seems to beget violence, to the point where we seem to become inured to it.

The fact is that the US suffers 10,000 gun murders a year, most involve innocent victims. Mass killings seem to awaken our sense of morality and humanity, like this Colorado event. But one or two at a time is so regular that no one pays attention.

Regular long guns, not automatic, should be sufficient for a “well-regulated militia” to satisfy the 2nd Amendment folks. They are hard to conceal and I believe will cut down on the number of gun murders, especially mass killings. Why do ordinary folk need handguns and assault weapons? Their only purpose is to kill human beings.

If G-d is indeed weeping, then I ask Him to reach down and comfort these families in the days and months ahead. It is a pleas I make with all my heart.

  • zephyr

    “It has already begun.”

We can only hope. The NRA has almost everyone chicken-hearted and wimped out when it comes to any serious national discussion about the bizarre and deadly culture of firearms in this country. It’s pathetic, dishonest, and cowardly.

I agree with jdledell’s comments on this as well.

  • ShannonLeee

Prayers for the victims, their families, and our nation. This touches all of us.
