chart junk

Via MediaMatters

I rarely give MediaMatters a first look, much less a second one.

But today? Today’s different.

This came across my Facebook news feed from an east coast journo. It is one of the most egregious pieces of chart junk — in this case, propaganda as well — that I have seen coming from a “news” organization.

I know, I know.

The folks here on the left are gonna scream one way and those on the right another.

I feel like Rodney King: can’t we all agree that a misrepresentation like this is just wrong?

They’re bad for democracy, they’re bad for civility, they’re bad for decision-making.

With this chart, the FOX show “America’s Newsroom” lied.

I swear, science and math are not Brussels sprouts or <insert hated food here>.

So just to quantify – the graphic depicts 6M as 3M, and 7M as a little over 8M, on a scale of 0 – 10M… the difference between Fox and Reality being 5/10 of the scale vs 1/10 of the scale, or approximately 500%.

Anyone see anything unusual here? I don’t.

  • LOL, epiphyte – you used logic. 🙂

What possible motive could FOX have for misrepresenting the numbers? I still think we should go to cartoon ads in the upcoming congressional campaign so we can reach all these FOX viewers.

  • Charts such as this are very common on Fox.

… I did not mean to say that the Conservatives are generally stupid. I meant to say that stupid people are generally Conservative. I believe that is so obviously and universally admitted a principle that I hardly think any gentleman will deny it.
    – John Stuart Mill (Public and Parliamentary Speeches, 31 May 1866, pp. 85-86.)

And the ‘stupid’ factor has been Fox News primary target audience since day one.
