Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders says race relations will be better under his administration than under the nation’s first black president because he will raise taxes on the wealthy.
During the PBS-sponsored debate on Thursday night, he said African Americans and Latinos were “hit especially hard by the disastrous behavior on Wall Street” and “lost half of their wealth” during the collapse.
Moderator Judy Woodruff took his comments a step further by asking if he thought race relations would be better than they have been under President Obama.
Sanders responded, “Absolutely, because what we will do is say, instead of giving tax breaks to billionaires, we are going to create millions of jobs for low-income kids so they’re not hanging out on street corners.” “We’re going to make sure that those kids stay in school or are able to get a college education,” he added.
“And I think when you give low-income kids, African American, white, Latino kids, the opportunities to get their lives together, they are not going to end up in jail. They’re going to end up in the productive economy, which is where we want them,” he continued.
But how will this improve race relations? More fairy tales from the Democratic Socialist. I would also add that every time Sanders talked about African Americans it was in the context of being low-income.
Hillary Clinton scored a direct hit on Sanders by attacking his disloyalty to President Obama saying he had criticized the president on several occasions, even questioning his leadership. Clinton said Sanders called for a primary challenger to Obama in 2011. That alone could derail Sanders’ bid to get more black votes since the president remains very popular in the black community.
