The British tabloid The Daily Express is reporting that the Saudi government has told the head of British intelligence that it’s fine with them if Israel bombs an Iranian nuclear site.
This sounded more than a little unlikely to me, so I hopped over to Newshoggers, which was one of the blogs commenting on the story at Memeorandum. TMV’s Ron Beasley isn’t buying it, either:
I’m sure that the Saudis are uncomfortable with the idea of Iran having nukes. The Sunni Saudis are a natural enemy of the Shiite Iranians. But openly cooperating with Israel? It doesn’t seem very likely. It would lead to domestic unrest and protests against them throughout the Arab world.
Ron points out that the Daily Express article does not name or even mention a single source.
Why? because they just made this shit up.
Needless to say, the same conservative bloggers who counsel skepticism, caution, not believing all the rumors until we have some facts (and we just don’t have the facts yet!), are showing precious little of any of these virtues regarding this piece.
Thers puts it quite well:
If you believe that Saudi Arabia is going to ally themselves openly with Israel to bomb another Muslim nation, and that this would be a good thing for the world, you’re, well, probably just nuts enough to take John Bolton seriously.
