This is what one Westboro Baptist Church member told a reporter who was covering a “protest” rally outside Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda, Maryland. I’m not sure what they were protesting. They said they were protesting the poet’s “lifestyle.” Maybe they were protesting the existence of the high school. Maybe they were protesting the parents for sending their children to a school with such a terrible name.
But don’t look at them. Look at that mass of high school kids behind the police barricade in the video that accompanies the WaPo news story. Listen to them talking about why they are there. Especially, listen closely to what the student at the very beginning of the video is shouting through the megaphone. I didn’t realize what she was shouting at first, because there’s so much background noise. I didn’t realize until the end of the video. If that does not move you to tears, you’re a tough cookie.
