In a move that has won bipartisan approval, President Bush has pardoned two US Border Patrol agents who were convicted of shooting a suspected drug dealer in 2005. The men were sentenced to long prison terms but are now expected to be released within 2 months after serving more than two years.
No word yet on how the hard core anti-Bush crowd will manage to oppose this move.
Actually he commuted their sentences, he didn't pardon them. I read quite a bit about this from all sides and the real point was their disregard for the rules and subsequent attempts to cover up wrongdoing.
It's really irritating (and lazy) when people just use generalizations based on “sides” for whatever. Who cares if it's bipartisan? What's that prove? I think on several topics, all mainstream politics is completely wrong. And yeah, so Bush commuted their sentence, and that means that anyone that disapproves does so because it was Bush?
The only people that should be characterized as anti-whatever are hypocrites who support an action when it's done by their side and oppose it when done by another. Sure there are tons of those people, but if you're going to comment on something at least make an argument rather than general slander.
As for if Bush did the right thing? I dunno it's tough to tell, but it makes A BIG difference that they were commuted and not pardoned. They will have to deal with legal repercussions for the rest of their lives because of the difference. So I'm tempted to think that they've gone (and will go through) enough just from a punishment perspective.
It is a big difference that their sentences were commuted not pardoned.
I have been following the issue since it began, and, it is great that he commuted the sentences, but, really, he should have straight pardoned them. It is a long, detailed, involved issue, and this is something Bush should have done years ago.
I don't stop by here too often since “Holly In Cincinnati” went on her Israeli, right-wing, war porn rampage, however with business slow today I decided to drop by. And what do I read, a post from Patrick praising the release of two criminals, while setting up the “anti-Bush” crowd as being wrong for apposing this miscarriage of justice.
Patrick,
This is why I appose this action by Bush, these men are criminals who shot a a man in the back under the cover of their badges and tried to cover it up.
These 2 “law officers” shot a man in the back as he was fleeing, a man who made no thereating gestures towards the officers. They then proceed to try and cover up the act and they got caught, prosecuted and sentenced by the system (you know the “justice system”) that Americans praise daily. The same system that has placed millions of black men behind bars on mandatory sentences for minor crimes, but the same system that only seems to apply to the “others” and the disenfranchised within our community, never the well connected (Scooter Libby) or the politically correct.
I guess you guys would also be for Bush pardoning Johannes Mehserle. I mean he also shot an unarmed minority in the back and he'll probably try and cover it up, so Bush should just go ahead and save us all the time and preemptively pardon him.
I have a suggestion for you all law and order pimps, next time a minority complains about the justice system, please STFU!!!!!!!!
