Comparing jailed Kentucky clerk Kim Davis to Rosa Parks is an insult to the legacy of the civil rights icon. The reality is Davis is more like bus driver James F. Blake, who had Parks arrested for refusing to give up her seat.
Rosa Parks was not a government employee and acted as a private citizen who had grown sick and tired of having to sit in the back of the bus because of the color of her skin. She defied the law. Kim Davis, on the other hand, is an elected official who represents her state government. She can’t act on a private matter in a government job. Kim Davis is charged with following the law.
Davis’ husband, Joe, says, “They have illegally put my wife in jail so we’re gonna ask Beshear to do his job or step down.” Um, one problem with that… Gov. Steve Beshear (R) disagrees the Supreme Court decision to legalize same sex marriage but recognizes that his job is not to act as judge and jury. He has a duty to uphold the constitution, no matter how much he disagrees with SCOTUS’ ruling.
Kim Davis has three options to end her self-inflicted nightmare — remain in jail, follow the court’s order and issue marriage licenses to all residents or simply resign. If she wants to be the martyr for the anti-gay marriage group, then do it in the capacity of a private citizen. So, Kim Davis is no Rosa Parks. It’s actually an insult to consider her as such.
